Febrile seizures in children

Febrile seizures in children

The Chinese family has changed from a large family with four generations living together to a standard family of three, and children have naturally become the core of the family. The thing that parents fear most is their children suddenly falling ill, and febrile convulsions in children are undoubtedly one of the most helpless diseases. When the child is convulsing or foaming at the mouth, parents have no idea how to deal with it and can only worry. But it doesn't solve any problems at all.

Therefore, as a qualified parent, it is very necessary to master some simple first aid knowledge, at least when the child really suffers from high fever convulsions, parents will not be at a loss. First of all, parents should understand what a febrile convulsion in children is, what sequelae it will have, and how to deal with it urgently at home?

If a child suddenly has a high fever of over 39 degrees Celsius, he or she may easily develop symptoms such as eyes rolling up, teeth clenching, whole body convulsions, and even loss of consciousness. This is medically called "febrile convulsions in children."

Emergency treatment of febrile seizures is divided into five steps:

Step 1: The child lies on his side or with his head tilted to one side. Immediately place the child in a prone position with his head tilted slightly back and his chin slightly protruding forward, without using a pillow. Never feed medicine to children (to prevent suffocation).

Step 2: Keep the airway open. Unbutton your collar, wrap a tongue depressor in a handkerchief and place it between the upper and lower molars to prevent biting your tongue. At the same time, use a handkerchief to promptly clear the secretions from the child's mouth and nose.

Step 3: Control seizures. Use your fingers to press the child's Ren Zhong, Hegu, Neiguan and other acupoints for two or three minutes, keep the surrounding environment quiet, and move the child as little as possible.

Step 4: Cool down. Cold compress—Place cold towels on the child’s forehead, palms, and thighs, and change them frequently; fill a hot water bottle with ice water or an ice pack, wrap it with a towel and place it on the child’s forehead, neck, or groin, or use a fever-reducing patch.

Step 5: Seek medical attention promptly.

Because most homes are not close to a hospital, and children who have a febrile seizure cannot be sent to the hospital immediately, these common sense of first aid are very important. Parents should keep a cool head and provide timely first aid to their children to help relieve their pain to the greatest extent. Worrying about it will only make things worse.
