Children's platelet count is 460

Children's platelet count is 460

Platelets are small pieces of cytoplasm and are an important component of blood. They have the function of promoting hemostasis and accelerating coagulation. The normal platelet count is 100-300. If the platelet count is lower or higher than normal, you need to pay attention. High platelet counts may have physiological causes. Too high platelets can also cause certain harm. What if a child's platelet count is as high as 460?

1. Causes of high platelet count in children

1. Secondary to polycythemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, acute bleeding or hemolysis, malignant tumors, myelofibrosis, etc. It can also be secondary to iron deficiency anemia, various inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, acute rheumatic fever, nodular periarteritis, ulcerative colitis, localized enteritis, tuberculosis, cirrhosis, chronic lung abscess, osteomyelitis, Wegener's granulomatosis, sarcoidosis, etc.

Platelet counts may increase in patients who have had their spleen removed surgically or have functional asplenia. Therefore, it is normal for patients with this type of spleen loss to have an increased platelet count.

2. Drugs that cause thrombocytosis

Certain drugs can also cause thrombocytosis, such as vinblastine and antifungal drugs. Injection of epinephrine can mobilize platelets from the spleen into the blood while keeping the total platelet count unchanged, resulting in a transient increase in platelet count. After discontinuation of thrombocytopenia caused by immunosuppressive drugs such as methotrexate, or after correction of thrombocytopenia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, the platelet count will increase within about 10 to 17 days. After treatment with prednisone, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura may cause transient thrombocytosis.

2. Treatment Methods

If a child has high platelet count, parents should take the child to the hospital immediately to find out whether it is primary or secondary so that specific treatment can be provided.
