Causes of low platelet count in children

Causes of low platelet count in children

Fever is a very prominent symptom in children with low platelets. In severe cases, the whole body may have a fever and the high fever may not subside. Children with low platelet counts tend to be irritable, restless, and prone to crying. Parents should pay more attention to their children's behavior and not take it lightly. Children are too young and have weak immunity, so parents should be very careful. The causes of low platelets have attracted more and more attention. The causes of low platelets are also incomplete. The causes of low platelets can generally be divided into the following three types:

1. Excessive platelet destruction: both congenital and acquired. Acquired platelet destruction includes immune and non-immune causes. Common immune causes of excessive platelet destruction include idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and drug-induced thrombocytopenia.

Non-immune causes of excessive platelet destruction include infection, disseminated intravascular coagulation, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, etc.

2. Death due to decreased platelet production or ineffective thrombocytopenia: It includes both hereditary and acquired types. Acquired thrombocytopenia is caused by certain factors such as drugs, malignant tumors, infection, ionizing radiation, etc. that damage hematopoietic stem cells or affect their proliferation in the bone marrow. These factors can affect multiple hematopoietic cells, often accompanied by varying degrees of anemia, leukopenia, and a significant decrease in bone marrow megakaryocytes.

3. Excessive retention of platelets in the spleen: most commonly seen in hypersplenism.

For this cause of platelet problem, we can further treat and regulate it.

1. During the remission stage, you can take part in some exercises, such as walking, jogging, Tai Chi, etc., to strengthen your physical fitness and improve your resistance to disease.

2. The diet should be regular, and the staple and side dishes should be mainly high in protein and vitamins, such as wheat, corn, millet, glutinous rice, beans, lean meat, eggs, etc. Eat more fresh fruits, such as oranges, red dates, walnuts, red-skinned peanuts, spinach, green peppers, spinach, cabbage, etc. Avoid spicy, greasy and indigestible foods, and quit stimulating substances such as tobacco and alcohol.

3. Avoid using drugs that can cause thrombocytopenia as much as possible, such as rifampicin, aspirin, quinine, cephalosporin, digitalis glycosides, etc.

4. You should keep a happy mood and avoid excessive mental stress. Maintain personal hygiene, prevent various infections, and pay special attention to preventing trauma.

Through the above understanding, I believe everyone has a certain understanding of this and understands the reasons why children have low platelets. However, I still want to remind everyone that it is very important to treat children's low platelets safely without side effects. Not only does the treatment have great side effects, but the recurrence rate is also very high. Therefore, you must carefully choose the treatment method to avoid delaying the child's condition and causing serious consequences.
