What should I do if my baby has a sore throat and a high fever?

Generally speaking, tonsillitis often occurs in children, especially some babies, because their immunity is relatively low, so they are prone to this disease. When facing the various symptoms of tonsillitis in babies, parents must handle them correctly, because many babies' throat inflammation is accompanied by high fever, which can be very harmful. So, what should parents do if their baby has a sore throat and a high fever?

Causes

The main pathogens of acute tonsillitis are beta-hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococci and Pneumococcus (adenovirus can also cause this disease). Mixed bacterial and viral infections are also common. The bacteria may be invaded from the outside, or they may be hidden in the tonsil crypts. When the body's resistance is reduced, the bacterial reproduction increases. Sometimes it is a prodromal symptom of acute infectious diseases, such as measles and scarlet fever. Acute tonsillitis is often a repeated acute attack based on chronic tonsillitis.

Clinical manifestations

Although the clinical manifestations of tonsillitis are divided into three types, namely catarrhal, crypt and follicular, due to different pathological changes, in terms of diagnosis and treatment, it can be divided into acute congestive tonsillitis and acute suppurative tonsillitis.

(I) Systemic symptoms: acute onset, aversion to cold, high fever, up to 39-40°C. Young children may suffer from convulsions, vomiting or lethargy, loss of appetite, constipation and general fatigue due to high fever.

(ii) Local symptoms: Obvious throat pain, especially when swallowing. In severe cases, the pain may radiate to the ears. Young children often cry and become restless because they cannot swallow. If children's breathing is affected by enlarged tonsils, their sleep may be disturbed and they will often wake up and feel restless at night.

What to do if tonsillitis causes fever

In the early stages of a baby's fever, the main symptoms are red face, hot forehead, cold hands and feet, and poor spirits. In addition, there are symptoms of various systems, such as runny nose, sore throat, and cough in respiratory tract infections, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea in gastroenteritis, and frequent urination, painful urination, and low back pain in urinary tract infections. The accompanying symptoms of various systems in infants are atypical, and may only include anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea.

There are many diseases that cause fever. Parents should pay attention to the pattern and cause of their children's fever. What should they do if the fever is caused by tonsillitis?

1. If your baby has tonsillitis and a fever, but the body temperature is below 38.5℃, it is not advisable to use antipyretics. If the body temperature exceeds 38.5℃, you can use cooling patches or ice compresses to reduce the temperature, or you can take pediatric antipyretic tablets (take medicine as prescribed by the doctor).

2. If the baby's temperature exceeds 39°C, the baby should stay in bed, open the blanket or loosen the clothes to expose the skin, place an ice pack or a cold wet towel on the head, and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.
