Acute sinusitis in children

Acute sinusitis in children

Children's physical health is very important, but children are often prone to illness in life. Parents should be very worried at ordinary times, but rhinitis is still a serious problem. Children are relatively young, so it is difficult to treat sinusitis after it occurs. Because children often become uncooperative, parents should pay attention to treating their children's sinusitis in a timely manner. So what causes acute sinusitis in children?

The causes, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis in children are different from those in adults. On average, children suffer from respiratory tract infections more than 6 to 8 times a year, and each attack may affect the sinuses. Most of them can heal on their own, but about 5% of patients may develop chronic sinusitis. Winter is the peak season for upper respiratory tract infections, which makes children more vulnerable to sinusitis.

1. Acute sinusitis in children

(1) Antibiotics: Correct and appropriate use of antibiotics is the golden rule for treating acute sinusitis. The antibiotic treatment course for acute sinusitis should be at least 10 to 14 days. If symptoms are not relieved, it needs to be extended for another two weeks. Because the bacteria are located very deep inside the body, antibiotics must reach a certain concentration in the blood to have a therapeutic effect. The deeper the infection, the longer it will take.

(2) Drainage of pus: In addition to the immediate effect of improving nasal congestion, since children's nasal cavity and sinus connectivity is greater than that of adults, suction through the nasal cavity can effectively help drain pus, especially for children who cannot blow their nose or are unwilling to blow their nose.

(3) Deswelling of nasal mucosa: In addition to the assistance of drugs (such as decongestants), local nasal steam therapy and nasal irrigation can help remove mucus and also have a deswelling effect on the nasal mucosa.

2. Chronic sinusitis in children

(1) The key is to enhance one’s overall disease resistance and use Chinese medicine to cure the disease so that it will not recur.

(2) Use Chinese medicine that clears away heat, removes toxins, nourishes yin and resolves phlegm.

(3) Use Chinese medicine to nourish the spleen and stomach and stimulate appetite.
