Is calcium deficiency normal in newborns?

Calcium deficiency in newborns is a common problem, but calcium supplementation for newborns cannot be ignored. For mothers, they should choose to breastfeed their newborns, and they can take some calcium supplements and vitamin D during breastfeeding.

1: Breast milk and formula powder can meet the calcium needs of normal growth of infants and young children. Exclusively breastfed infants should receive 400 IU of vitamin D per day. Everyone must remember that the full name of "rickets" is "vitamin D deficiency rickets", not "calcium deficiency rickets"! Don't always talk about calcium supplementation. If you take too much calcium supplement, in addition to the problems that the product may cause, you may also experience constipation, kidney stones, etc.

2: Exclusively breastfed babies should receive 400 international units of vitamin D every day. There is no need to supplement with fish oil (DHA), calcium and multivitamins. DHA is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid and is an essential component of breast milk. The standards for adding DHA to formula milk are based on the content in breast milk. DHA plays an important role in the development of the fetal brain and immune system, but the more you eat, the better the effect is not necessarily the case. Breastfeeding mothers can supplement DHA.

3: Children who are exclusively breastfed do not need additional calcium supplements. It is recommended that breastfeeding mothers must supplement themselves with calcium and vitamin D, because the mother's body needs more calcium during breastfeeding, and vitamin D is beneficial to the absorption of calcium, but mothers cannot give calcium supplements to their children.

4: Do babies need calcium supplements? In this regard, we should try to change our perspective and replace the question of "whether they are lacking and how to supplement it" with how to provide children with a more balanced and healthier diet. This will help us relax our nervous hearts. Experts also suggest that there is no need for infants to blindly supplement calcium, as excessive calcium supplementation is actually harmful to their health.
