What should I do if my premature baby fails the hearing screening?

In life, newborn babies need to undergo some newborn hearing screening tests, mainly to avoid hearing problems in newborn babies. So what should we do if the hearing screening fails? Let us introduce it below.

Newborns undergo audiological testing 2-5 days after birth. Based on the test results, the children are divided into two groups: those who pass the screening and those who fail the screening:

1. Newborns who fail the screening are considered to have hearing impairment and must be rescreened within 42 days of birth. If they still fail the screening, they should be transferred to a specialized hearing diagnosis structure, complete diagnostic audiological testing and evaluation within 3 months, and be diagnosed and treated within 6 months.

Most NHS methods for hearing screening in children are otoacoustic emissions and automatic auditory impairment, both of which are very useful. Currently, many hospitals have carried out hearing screening combined with deafness gene testing to jointly screen for hearing diseases.

The significance of NHS hearing screening for children

The purpose is to detect and intervene in the baby's hearing loss early, thereby minimizing the adverse effects of hearing loss on the baby. For example: early detection and early effective intervention of congenital hearing impairment can achieve a recovery rate of over 90%.

For babies diagnosed with hearing impairment, treatment methods include: speech amplification, medication, surgery, hearing aids, cochlear implants and speech rehabilitation training. Treatment should be based on the specific cause.
