Can children's meningitis be cured?

Can children's meningitis be cured?

Meningitis refers to inflammation of the meninges due to a viral infection. Meningitis can affect the normal development of the patient's brain, especially the impact on children. Meningitis in children is more serious than that in adults because children's meninges are more delicate, so if inflammation occurs, it is not only more difficult to cure, but also causes greater harm to children. So, can meningitis in children be cured?

Meningitis is an infection of the delicate membranes between the skull and brain called meninges. The disease is often complicated by a bacterial or viral infection of any part of the body, such as an ear, sinus, or upper respiratory tract infection. Bacterial meningitis is a particularly serious illness that requires prompt treatment. If not treated promptly, death or permanent brain damage may occur within hours. Viral meningitis is more serious, but most people can recover completely, while a few have sequelae.

treat

Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening illness and should be treated immediately. Go to the emergency room immediately if symptoms occur.

The treatment of bacterial meningitis is mainly based on finding bacteria through cerebrospinal fluid smear and culture, selecting effective antibiotics based on drug sensitivity tests, and providing timely treatment to reduce the occurrence of sequelae. It is also necessary to treat high fever symptomatically, control convulsions, reduce intracranial pressure, relieve cerebral edema, and use hormones to reduce intracranial inflammatory adhesions.

Antibiotics are ineffective against viral meningitis and antiviral drugs should be added.

How can meningitis be prevented?

(1) Discover patients early and isolate and treat them on the spot.

(2) During the epidemic, we should carry out health publicity, avoid large gatherings and group activities as much as possible, do not bring children to public places, and wear masks when going out.

(III) Drug prevention: Sulfonamides are still used in China. For close contacts, iodine pyrimethamine (SD) can be used. Adults should take 2 g/day, divided into 2 doses and taken with an equal amount of sodium bicarbonate for 3 consecutive days; children should take 100 mg/kg per day. During an epidemic of meningococcal meningitis, anyone who has two of the following symptoms: ① fever with headache; ② mental depression; ③ acute pharyngitis; ④ bleeding of the skin and oral mucosa can be given a full course of sulfonamide treatment in sufficient doses, which can effectively reduce the incidence rate and prevent the epidemic. Rifampicin or minocycline is used for prevention abroad. Rifampicin 600 mg per day for 5 consecutive days. The daily dose for children aged 1 to 12 years is 10 mg/kg.

(IV) Vaccine prevention: Currently, groups A and C capsular polysaccharide vaccines are widely used both at home and abroad. The protection rate of group A polysaccharide vaccine purified by ultracentrifugation was 94.9%, and the average antibody titer increased by 14.1 times after immunization. There are still people in China who use polysaccharide vaccines for "emergency" prevention. If the incidence of meningococcal disease in January and February is greater than 10/100,000, or the incidence is higher than the same period of the previous year, vaccination can be carried out among the population.
