Phimosis in a 10-year-old boy

Phimosis in a 10-year-old boy

Phimosis is not only common in adults, but also in many children. If a ten-year-old boy has phimosis, parents should not be too nervous or want to undergo surgical treatment. They can first try to use external force to turn out the glans. Some cases of pseudophimosis can be solved by this method. So, what should we do if a ten-year-old boy has phimosis? Let’s take a closer look at it below.

Children nowadays have better nutritional conditions, so they generally have no problems with their development and puberty starts relatively early. Most children begin puberty after the age of 10. The penis starts to grow rapidly, and after 2-3 years it has a full-fledged shape. At this time, the glans of some children will appear on their own, while others will slowly turn it out with their hands. Generally speaking, as long as the foreskin can be smoothly turned down to expose the glans penis and the outer opening of the foreskin is loose, there is no need to rush for surgery.

Many parents want to know at what age is it appropriate for children to undergo circumcision surgery? There is actually no standard answer to this. Below are some of my clinical experiences and suggestions.

Because most children before puberty have phimosis, therefore, you should never perform surgery on your child as soon as you hear about phimosis. Generally speaking, as long as it does not affect the child's urination, you can wait and there is no need to rush to have a circumcision. On the one hand, because the child is too young to cooperate, general anesthesia is required, and it is not worth it to perform this operation under general anesthesia.

Another most important point is that before puberty, the penis of a child has not yet fully developed, and it is difficult to accurately grasp the shape of the foreskin during surgery. After the operation, as the penis develops, it is difficult to predict what the foreskin will look like in the future. In clinical practice, I have come across many people who underwent circumcision surgery in childhood and requested plastic surgery when they grew up because they felt their appearance was ugly.

Therefore, according to my experience, the best age for children to undergo circumcision surgery should be about 1-2 years after the onset of puberty, for example, after the age of 12. Of course, this also depends on whether the child can cooperate and the development of the penis. If the child cannot cooperate or the penis is not well developed, the time will have to be postponed.
