Acute poisoning is mostly caused by accidental ingestion or suicide, but may also be caused by excessive intravenous doses or rapid injections. The main symptoms of the poisoned person are excitement and delirium, followed by drowsiness, shallow and rapid breathing, cyanosis of the skin, loss of pain sensation, dilated pupils, and coma. Death in the early stage is mostly caused by paralysis of the respiratory center, and in the late stage is mostly caused by respiratory failure, cerebral edema or combined lung infection.

Chronic poisoning is manifested by drowsiness, difficulty in thinking and associating thoughts, memory loss, poor judgment, emotional instability, and agitation and irritability. When the symptoms are severe, there will be slurred speech, nystagmus, slow gait, and they are often accompanied by mental symptoms such as visual hallucinations, delusions, panic, and mania.

The representative drug of benzodiazepines - Valium, has highly selective antianxiety effects, good therapeutic effects, a wide safety range, long-lasting effects, relatively less dependence, mild withdrawal symptoms, and a strong anticonvulsant effect. Medical applications are widespread. However, after long-term use and discontinuation of the medication, mental symptoms may occur: anxiety, fear, uneasiness, insomnia, headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, limb tremors, muscle cramps, etc. Intravenous administration of these drugs may cause hypotension and respiratory depression.
