What to do if your 19-month-old baby has astigmatism

It is the nature of every child to explore the outside world. When the child is five or six months old, he or she will gradually have a good contact with the outside world and cognition. When the child is about 19 months old, that is, when he or she is almost two years old, the child can walk and touch things. Then the child's eyes are the windows to the soul. How should the phenomenon of astigmatism in 19-month-old babies be treated in daily life?

Astigmatism is an abnormal refractive condition of the eye, which is related to the curvature of the cornea.

The human eye is not perfect. If the cornea is curved at some angles and flat at other angles, light cannot be accurately focused on the retina. This condition is called astigmatism. People with astigmatism have difficulty seeing objects in detail. Generally speaking, astigmatism does not occur alone, and the patient's eyes are usually accompanied by myopia or hyperopia.

The main method to correct astigmatism is to wear glasses. Astigmatism glasses will have a special curvature at a certain angle to correct the astigmatism of the patient's eyes at that angle; contact lenses or laser refractive surgery can also correct astigmatism problems.

In addition to the cornea, the uneven curvature of the lens is another cause of astigmatism.

Astigmatism is usually congenital. If your astigmatism is high and you did not wear glasses when you were a child, then you will see things blurry from childhood to adulthood. However, since you have no comparison, it is more difficult to detect than myopia and hyperopia. People's vision is relatively poor when they are born. In order to fully develop, they rely on the refractive system to project clear images onto the retina to stimulate the development of the fundus. People with high astigmatism have blurred vision both near and far. The fundus of the eye is not adequately stimulated, causing underdevelopment and amblyopia. If you have your eyes tested and cannot see 1.0 even with adequate glasses, then you have amblyopia. If you are over 10 years old, you have exceeded the period of visual development and amblyopia treatment will be basically ineffective.

Many mothers are particularly worried about the astigmatism of their 19-month-old babies, and they are afraid that there will be problems with their children's vision and cornea. In fact, this disease is a genetic disease. It is usually recommended that parents do not let their children watch too much TV or use mobile phones, etc., as this will affect their children's vision development.
