What to do if your child breaks his knee

What to do if your child breaks his knee

Every child likes to play, and in the process of playing, there will inevitably be bumps and bruises of various kinds. The most vulnerable part is the knee. So what should you do if a child’s knee is broken? At this time, parents must not panic. They should make rational judgments based on the child’s injuries and take reasonable measures. Never make the following mistakes.

1Minor wounds can heal on their own and do not require treatment.

Wrong. Although the human body has the ability to heal itself, it is incorrect to ignore it. When a wound is exposed to the air, it will dry out quickly. However, the growth and recovery of wound cells require a moist environment. When a wound is exposed to the air, it cannot provide a moist environment, which will seriously hinder the recovery of the wound. If the wound cannot heal in time, it may cause scarring on the skin, so the skin wound needs to be sealed and protected.

2 Use gauze to bandage the wound.

Wrong, using gauze to bandage wounds is a method that has been eliminated in the last century. The wound needs to be sealed and protected, but not with gauze. Because gauze itself has a strong water absorption function, using gauze will still cause the wound to dry out, thereby destroying the conditions for the skin's self-growth and recovery. The correct way is to use professional wound dressing materials or medical vaseline to seal and protect the wound, which can ensure that the wound is in the best self-recovering moist environment. In addition, due to the strong adsorption effect of gauze, it will stick to the wound. When removing the gauze, it will be extremely painful and may even cause secondary damage to the wound.

3 The wound needs to be disinfected with disinfectant.

Wrong. Many parents worry about their children’s wounds getting infected, so they use disinfectants such as hydrogen peroxide to treat the wounds. This is totally unnecessary and may even be counterproductive. Bacteria are everywhere in our lives. What really protects us 24 hours a day is our own immunity, which can completely eliminate the bacteria in the wound. Although disinfectants can kill bacteria, they also kill a large number of normal cells that are in the process of self-regenerating and growing, which is why children feel great pain when using disinfectants. After being killed, these normally growing cells will remain in the wound, causing great harm to the wound. Killing recovering cells and interrupting the wound's self-healing process are most likely to cause scars in the future. The correct approach is to rinse the wound with clean water, seal it and keep it moist. No disinfection is needed. If there are bacteria that are too powerful for the human body to overcome, then household disinfectants will be ineffective and there is no need to use them. Therefore, we only need to pay attention to whether the wound has persistent pain, bleeding or pus. Otherwise, go directly to the hospital for treatment.

4 If the child has an injury, send him to the hospital immediately for treatment.

Many parents like to take their children to the hospital all day long, which is actually very irrational. First of all, the human body can heal ordinary wounds on its own, so there is no need to elevate matters from the nursing level to the medical level. Secondly, as professionals, doctors have the duty to use more powerful medical means to help patients since patients come to them for medical treatment. For example, using certain drugs to help wounds recover is not the doctor's problem. But every parent needs to understand that we don't want our children to be exposed to too many drugs, we reject over-medicalization, and we believe there is no better way than for the body to heal itself, especially for children. In addition, some businesses in the market have launched medicated wound care products. Please keep your children away from them.

5. Insufficient attention is paid to special types of wounds.

The severity of a wound cannot be judged solely by its size. There are several types of wounds that must be sent to the hospital immediately regardless of their size. Animal wounds, especially those from cats and dogs; wounds caused by metal rust or contact; injuries to bones or tendons that prevent the body from moving freely; small foreign objects stuck in the wound that cannot be removed.
