What's wrong with the baby's vomiting blood?

The birth of a baby makes the mother who has just given birth busy again. The newborn needs extra care and feeding. Among them, breastfeeding is the healthiest, most nutritious and most acceptable feeding method for the baby's stomach and intestines. However, many problems may also occur during the feeding process, such as vomiting or vomiting blood. This article briefly introduces the causes and solutions for children vomiting blood.

Spitting up can occur due to overfeeding or illness. Newborn spitting up requires symptomatic treatment, because the causes and symptoms of spitting up are different for each baby, so the baby's physical condition should be adjusted according to the symptoms of spitting up. What happens if there is blood when a newborn spits up milk? What happens when a newborn spits up blood?

1. The bloody spitting up of newborns is related to the feeding method

Newborns are too small, and when they spit up milk, their tiny capillaries will rupture and blood will come out. Moreover, the baby's spitting up and regurgitation of milk are closely related to the parents' feeding method.

Method: When breastfeeding, the newborn should be held up at an angle, and not fed while lying down; if feeding with a bottle, the nipple hole should be of appropriate size, the milk should not be too hot or too cold, and even more so, avoid inhalation of air; after feeding, do not turn the baby over, the baby should be leaning against an adult, and the back should be patted gently to allow the swallowed air to expel.

2. The reason why newborns vomit blood is due to physiological characteristics

A newborn's vomiting of blood may be due to a physiological characteristic of the baby - milk regurgitation. The stomach of children and adults is generally in a vertical position, while the stomach of a baby is horizontal with a flat bottom. When there is gas in the stomach, the gas will rise to the upper part of the stomach and overflow from the stomach, bringing out some milk. This is milk regurgitation.

Method: It is recommended that after the newborn finishes feeding, you hold the baby upright and pat the baby's back until the baby burps, and then hold the baby upright for 20 minutes. Lay your baby flat with his head tilted to one side to prevent vomited milk from choking on the trachea or flowing into the ears. When the baby is four or five months old, this phenomenon will decrease and the spitting up may even stop.

3. If a newborn vomits blood, it may be the mother’s blood

There is another possibility for a newborn to spit up blood. If the baby is breastfed, the blood in the spitted milk is most likely from the mother, not the baby, because the baby accidentally bites the mother's nipple while drinking milk.

Method: Usually, the mother who is breastfeeding has a wound on the nipple. When the wound heals, the bloodshot will naturally disappear.

What to do if your newborn spits up a lot

1. Hold the baby at a 45° angle. Try to hold the baby while feeding, with the baby's body tilted at about 45°. This way, the milk will flow in more naturally, reducing the chance of spitting up.

2. Burping your baby. Burping can help your baby expel the air sucked into the stomach. Burping your baby after feeding will effectively reduce spitting up. You can hold your baby upright on your shoulder and gently pat his back.

3. Appropriate side lying after feeding. Many mothers put their babies on the bed soon after feeding. However, this sudden change of posture may cause the baby to spit up a lot of milk. The baby should be placed on his side first, and then slowly changed to lying on his back.

4. Don’t let your baby eat too quickly. A pacifier that is too big or a baby who is too hungry will make the baby eat too quickly, resulting in severe spitting up. Therefore, mothers should pay attention to choosing appropriate pacifiers for their babies, and also pay attention to the amount of milk and the interval between feedings.
