Depressed skull fractures in children

Depressed skull fractures in children

Compared with adults, babies' skulls are more fragile, so when taking care of their babies, parents must be careful not to damage the baby's skull, otherwise depressed skull fractures are likely to occur. After a child suffers a depressed skull fracture, he or she must go to the hospital for repair in time, otherwise the fracture will damage the child's brain nerves. Next, let’s take a look at the surgical methods for depressed skull fractures in children.

(1) Depressed skull fractures in newborns should be reduced by non-surgical methods whenever possible, that is, a fetal head vacuum is placed in the skull depression to reduce the depressed fracture using negative pressure.

Skull fractures in children have significant particularities. The skull of infants and young children is thin and soft, with fibrous septa, great elasticity and strong cushioning capacity. Therefore, although the skull is depressed, it is not broken and there is no fracture line, which is the so-called "ping-pong ball-like" depressed fracture. The treatment of skull fractures in children varies greatly due to age and individual differences.

(2) Depressed fractures in infants and young children, if they have no neurological symptoms, can be repositioned on their own during their growth and generally do not require surgery.

(3) Indications for surgery:

①X-rays show that the bone fragment has sunk deeply, pierced the dura mater or entered the brain.

②Scalp; signs of cerebrospinal fluid retention;

③ Have neurological symptoms;

④ Increased intracranial pressure, suspected intracranial hematoma;

⑤ Self-reset failed.

After knowing the principles of treatment of pediatric skull fractures, it will be of great help to us. Doctors usually have two major ways to treat this disease. One is non-surgical reduction method, and the other is that the patient may need surgery. No matter which treatment method is used, it must be timely.
