How to give first aid to a child who is having a convulsion?

Children's body resistance to disease is relatively weak, so it is very common for children to get sick. Among the many diseases, fever is one of the more common ones. When a child's body temperature rises too high, the child may experience convulsions, which we often call seizures. At this time, parents must pay attention and take some first aid measures to avoid causing greater harm to the child.

(1) Opening the meridians and orifices: In order to promptly relieve the child's loss of consciousness, clenched jaws, and severe convulsions, the kneading method is usually used to awaken the child. That is, use heavy hands to knead the Ren Zhong, He Gu, Yin Tang, and Yong Quan acupoints repeatedly. If there is a needle on hand, acupuncture can also be performed until the child regains consciousness.

For those with clenched jaws, acupuncture should be used to induce bleeding at the Chengjiang and Xiaguan points, and the Shixuan point on the fingertips can also be used to induce bleeding. If you have the tendency to sneeze, you can blow a little bit of Xiejingsan into your nose to induce sneezing, and rub your teeth frequently with Guanxiangsan or Wumei to loosen your jaws. Then, take Suhexiang pills or Zhibaodan orally to help open up your orifices. This often produces immediate results.

(2) Stopping convulsions: The folk remedy of “opening the four gates” is one of the effective methods commonly used when convulsions occur. The so-called "opening the four gates" is to take the Hegu point (double) of the hand yangming meridian and the Taichong point (double) of the middle jueyin meridian, a total of four points on the left and right. After acupuncture with strong stimulation technique, moxibustion is used for 3 to 4 times. This can often promote blood circulation and temporarily stop convulsions.

(3) When a child has a convulsion, parents should remain calm, avoid shouting or shaking the child, let the child lie quietly in bed, and avoid all unnecessary stimulation.

(4) Remove oral secretions from the child promptly to keep the respiratory tract open. The head should be tilted to one side to prevent secretions and vomitus from being inhaled into the trachea and causing suffocation.

(5) To prevent children from getting hurt, wrap chopsticks or toothbrush handles with gauze and place them between the upper and lower front teeth to prevent them from biting their tongues.

When a child is found to be having a convulsion, in addition to taking the above-mentioned first aid measures, parents should also take the child to the doctor in time. Because high fever can cause convulsions in children, when a child shows symptoms of fever, parents must pay attention to cooling the child down in time, and take physical or drug cooling measures according to body temperature to prevent the child from experiencing convulsions.
