Causes of infection of cytomegalovirus IgG-positive newborns

Disease is like a devil, everyone resists it. Viruses are killers of human health. For thousands of years, people have been fighting against diseases. With the development of modern medical technology, people have gradually come to understand some viruses and even have ways to conquer them. A healthy body is what everyone pursues, but some children are tested for viruses at birth, such as cytomegalovirus IgG-positive infection. So what is the cause of cytomegalovirus IgG-positive infection in newborns?

The clinical manifestations of this disease vary depending on the patient's infection method, age, immune status and comorbidities.

1. Congenital infection

In addition to miscarriage and stillbirth, about 5% of infected live births show typical systemic CID, that is, multiple systems and organs are involved. Another 5% showed atypical clinical manifestations, and the remaining 90% were subclinical. Neonatal CID is characterized by invasion of the mononuclear-macrophage system and the central nervous system, such as small for gestational age, microcephaly, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, skin ecchymoses, hydrocephalus, and brain tissue calcification. Studies have found that primary HCMV infection in early pregnancy causes more serious damage to the fetal nervous system than recurrent and secondary infection in the second and third trimesters.

2. Perinatal infection

It is mainly transmitted through birth canal infection during delivery, retrograde infection through the cervix, and postpartum breastfeeding infection. There are usually no symptoms of infection at birth, and the disease develops 2 to 4 months later. It is mostly subclinical, with respiratory and digestive system symptoms as the main symptoms, such as irritating cough (whooping cough-like), shortness of breath, cyanosis, interstitial pneumonia, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, and thrombocytopenic purpura. The mortality rate of this disease can reach 30%, and pneumonia combined with respiratory failure is the main direct cause of death.

Through the introduction of the article, everyone also knows the infectious agent of cytomegalovirus IgG-positive newborns. Due to congenital infection, it often leads to fetal death or miscarriage in the womb. If the pregnant woman herself carries cytomegalovirus IgG, the virus will infect the baby through the placenta and cervical secretions. Therefore, adults should take care of their own health before becoming pregnant to avoid cytomegalovirus infection in newborns.
