Causes of fetal omphalocele

Causes of fetal omphalocele

Newborn babies are small. However, a normal newborn baby has all the organs that the human body should have when he is born, just as the saying goes: "Although the sparrow is small, it has all the internal organs." However, newborns are small after all, so although they have various organs, they are still incompletely developed. Therefore, in fact, most newborn babies have some very fragile parts. For example, fetal omphalocele is one of the manifestations of incomplete fetal development. So what are the other causes of fetal omphalocele?

The reason is that the umbilical cord does not grow completely during the development of the fetus.

It may look normal on the outside, but it is relatively weak compared to other parts of the abdomen. When a child cries, the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases, and the intestines or organs in the abdominal cavity will protrude from the weakest point. Of course, the liver is also an abdominal organ. Umbilical hernia in infants: It is relatively common, mostly reducible hernia, and incarceration is rare. When crying, standing and exerting force, a lump will swell in the umbilicus, usually 1 to 2 cm in diameter. There are no other symptoms and it is often discovered accidentally during bathing or changing clothes.

Most cases can heal themselves within one year through the gradual contraction of the umbilical fascia ring. Therefore, before the age of 2, unless the baby is incarcerated, you can wait. Use non-surgical treatment to promote spontaneous healing. If the child is over 2 years old and the diameter of the umbilical hernia exceeds 1.5 cm, surgical treatment is appropriate. Make a semicircular incision along the navel 1 cm away from the umbilicus to separate the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and significantly open the anterior rectus sheath, hernia ring and hernia sac. Make a midline incision on the abdominal line, free the hernia sac, and return the hernia contents. After removing part of the hernia sac at the hernia ring, suture it and then suture the edges of the rectus sheath on both sides (i.e., the abdominal line) intermittently. Finally, suture the skin.

Now parents must have some understanding of the causes of fetal umbilical cord protrusion. Therefore, if your newborn baby has a bulging belly button, don’t worry too much. It is most likely normal. However, if the baby's belly button is still obviously bulging as he grows, parents should pay attention. The baby may be unwell. Parents should pay attention to the baby's physical condition at all times and it is best to take the baby to the hospital for examination.
