Temperature standard for newborns

Temperature standard for newborns

The key to measuring whether a newborn is healthy is to see whether the child's body temperature is normal. Therefore, measuring the body temperature of a newborn is a very important link. So what is the standard of the newborn's body temperature? Many parents may not know much about this knowledge, so let's have a detailed understanding of this knowledge together!

There are three common places to measure body temperature, namely the mouth, armpits and anus:

Normal body temperature at the anus is between 36.5℃ and 37.5℃;

In the oral cavity, it is between 36.2℃ and 37.3℃;

In the armpits it is between 35.9℃ and 37.2℃.

After measurement, any temperature that exceeds the normal range by more than 0.5℃ is called fever. A temperature not exceeding 38°C is called low fever, and a temperature exceeding 39°C is called high fever.

The factors that affect your baby’s body temperature are as follows:

1. Your baby’s normal body temperature also fluctuates

Not all healthy children have the same body temperature; each baby's body temperature is unique. Mothers can measure their baby's body temperature when the baby is in good physical condition to know what the child's body temperature is. Generally speaking, normal body temperature is between 36 and 37 degrees; if the temperature reaches or exceeds 37.7 degrees, you should consider whether your baby has a fever. But sometimes your baby's temperature can vary at different times of the day, or rise after strenuous exercise.

2. Choose a good thermometer

There are many types of thermometers, ranging from simple and easy-to-use head temperature measurement strips, to advanced digital thermometers, and infrared thermometers that are placed in the external ear canal and can measure body temperature in just a few seconds. The temperature measured by different thermometers may vary.

3. Regular measurement

Fever is a typical manifestation of the body's own struggle against disease, and babies are no exception. When your baby has a fever, it is very important to measure and observe changes in your baby's body temperature regularly. You may need to measure once or twice an hour and monitor your baby's condition in conjunction with other symptoms. If the fever is accompanied by cough or runny nose, it may be a cold or influenza; if the baby pulls his ears hard while having a fever, it may indicate that the baby's ears are inflamed.

The above is the standard value of newborn body temperature. At the same time, parents need to be reminded that there are many factors that affect the body temperature of newborns. Therefore, in order to ensure the accuracy of the results, it is recommended that parents should choose a good thermometer and measure their baby regularly. If you find that your child has a high temperature, you should go to the hospital for treatment immediately.
