The harm of calcium deficiency

The harm of calcium deficiency

From childhood to adulthood, many people have grown up with the endless calcium supplement advertisements on television. So most people have known since childhood that calcium supplementation is important. However, most people do not know why calcium supplementation is important, nor do they know the normal amount of calcium intake. They only know that they need to supplement calcium if they are not tall, and that they need to supplement calcium if they do not have strength. They associate many irrelevant things with calcium deficiency, which is inappropriate.

So in what aspects does calcium deficiency mainly manifest itself? What should be the normal calcium intake? What are the different reactions of different people to calcium deficiency? I believe that many people with calcium deficiency have problems of one kind or another. The following is an explanation of some aspects.

The adverse effects of calcium deficiency mainly target teeth and bones. Many Chinese residents currently do not consume enough calcium, with the average calcium intake being only 388.8 mg, according to the 2002 Chinese Residents Nutrition and Health Survey. The Chinese Nutrition Society has formulated a recommended calcium intake of 800mg to 1000mg for adults and 1000mg to 1200mg for pregnant women in the middle and late stages of pregnancy. The current intake of 388.8mg is less than half of the recommended intake, so calcium supplements should be taken. For example, if children do not take in enough calcium, they will not be tall enough and their bones will develop poorly. Rickets, X-shaped legs or O-shaped legs are all manifestations of calcium deficiency. Calcium deficiency can also cause many adverse reactions in children, such as bone pain. If a pregnant woman is calcium deficient, there will be many other problems, such as leg cramps, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, proteinuria, and swollen feet, which requires calcium supplementation. Women should supplement calcium during menopause because the decrease in estrogen will lead to increased calcium loss, which will cause osteoporosis. The most serious consequence of osteoporosis is osteoporotic fractures, many of which are femoral neck fractures of the hip, forearm fractures, and compression fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine. Calcium supplementation is mainly used to prevent osteoporotic fractures.

From the above introduction, we can understand that calcium deficiency targets bones and teeth, which have the highest calcium content. There is a fixed standard for calcium intake. The reactions of calcium deficiency in children, pregnant women, and the elderly are different, but they are all relatively dangerous. After understanding this knowledge, you can provide calcium supplements for children, the elderly and expectant mothers in your family in different ways according to different situations.
