Are there any side effects of using enema on children?

Suppositories are a common and widely used lubricant in daily life. People mainly use them for defecation. Because people often suffer from constipation, the feces cannot be discharged normally, which results in the body being unable to bear it. With enema, the feces can be discharged smoothly without damaging the anus. Sometimes children also use enema, so what are the side effects of enema for children?

Can babies use enema?

1. Laxatives are not recommended for young babies, so once a child is constipated, many parents think of using enema first. Because some of its body systems are not fully developed, frequent use will irritate the intestinal wall and cause gastrointestinal disorders, causing the baby to suffer from constipation and diarrhea from time to time, and even affect its normal development.

2. If the baby's constipation is not serious, there is no need to use enema. It can be used when the situation is serious, but it must be inserted slowly from the anus to stimulate the rectum under the doctor's advice. However, the frequency of use should not be too high, otherwise it will cause dependence. Even if the dosage is increased in the future, the effect will not be good and it may aggravate constipation.

3. If the baby has not been constipated before, but suddenly has not defecated for more than two days, and is also accompanied by a bloated lower abdomen, poor feeding, and crying more than before, it means that he has constipation. It is not recommended to use enema immediately at this time. You can try other means to help the baby defecate first. For example, you can apply vegetable oil on your fingers and massage the anus, or insert a cotton swab soaked in oil into the anus. If the above two methods are ineffective, you can use a suppository.

The above methods are prone to dependency, so they cannot be used frequently.

4. To prevent constipation, you can take the following measures:

(1) Drink enough water;

(2) When the baby is over three months old, you can increase the intake of fruit and vegetable juice appropriately;

(3) Help and cultivate children to develop good habits of regular bowel movements.

(4) Gently press the abdomen and massage clockwise for 10-20 minutes twice a day to promote intestinal peristalsis;

(5) Do not let your baby lie down all day. He should do appropriate exercise, such as passive exercises.
