What is the cause of a child's thick nasal discharge?

We all know that colds generally cause coughing and runny nose, but the runny nose phenomenon will react according to the severity of our illness. When a child has a lot of thick nasal mucus, it may be caused by rhinitis, mainly because there are a large number of germs in the nasal cavity, and these germs will be eliminated from the body through the thick nasal mucus. However, there are many causes of thick nasal discharge in children. You can read the content of the article.

Whenever the seasons change, babies often have runny noses. This is directly related to the inability to adapt to the ambient temperature, low resistance, pathogen infection, allergies, etc. So what causes a baby's runny nose?

Especially when the nasal cavity is inflamed, the nasal mucosa will become congested and edematous, and secrete a large amount of purulent secretions, commonly known as snot. When a large number of pathogens continue to invade the nasal tissue, the inflammation in the nasal cavity will continue to worsen, resulting in yellow nasal discharge or sticky nasal discharge. Especially in this case, it is easy to induce rhinitis, so you should pay attention to prevention;

If rhinitis has been confirmed, you should pay attention to changes in environmental temperature and prevent colds to avoid aggravating the symptoms. When the symptoms of runny nose continue to worsen, oral rhinitis medication can be taken for observation. If it is caused by allergies, timely anti-allergic drug treatment and avoiding contact with allergens will help improve symptoms or recovery.

How to reduce runny nose symptoms?

1. When your baby has nasal congestion and runny nose, you can use hot compress, which will help dilate local blood vessels, improve blood circulation, and thus relieve the symptoms of nasal congestion and runny nose. Because the baby's skin is delicate, avoid using too high a temperature when applying hot compresses to avoid burns;

Second, when there is a lot of runny and sticky nasal mucus, it is easy to cause nasal mucus to crust over and form nasal mucus, which will affect breathing. At this time, you can use a nasal aspirator or a hot and wet cotton swab to soften the nasal mucus in the nasal cavity and suck it out of the nasal cavity. This helps to improve the symptoms of nasal congestion and keep the respiratory tract unobstructed;

Third, if the baby is diagnosed with a cold, in this case, the baby can be treated with cold medicine and observed. The general course of the disease is about seven days. If the runny (sticky) nose symptoms do not improve after the cold symptoms have recovered, it may be related to rhinitis. Therefore, timely symptomatic treatment is necessary to prevent chronic inflammation. Long-term rhinitis will affect the baby's brain development, memory, etc.

4. If the baby's nasal mucus is thick and you can't squeeze it out or suck it out, mothers can twist a piece of gauze, add a little pure water, and twist it in a clockwise direction to twist out the thick mucus in the baby's nasal cavity. This is also a good method.

5. Pay attention to indoor ventilation and try to maintain the room temperature at 24~26℃ and the humidity at 60%~70%. When the weather is cold, you can use air conditioning or heater to change the room temperature to relieve your baby's symptoms of nasal congestion and runny nose. There is another point worth noting. If the baby has nasal crust, we cannot use tweezers to remove it directly, or use tweezers to remove it, as this will damage the baby's nasal mucosa. We can drip a little saline solution, and the treatment after dripping the saline solution is the same as sucking the snot.

In most cases, a baby's stuffy nose is not a serious problem. If the above methods cannot improve the symptoms, especially if the stuffy nose lasts too long and even affects sleep, feeding and mental state, parents should pay attention to it. It is recommended to seek help from an otolaryngologist for further examination, early diagnosis of the cause and early treatment.
