Should newborns take medicine before or after feeding?

After being born, newborns are very susceptible to virus invasion and may develop some diseases due to their low body resistance and lack of adaptation to the external environment. Since children are relatively young, timely measures need to be taken to treat them when they get sick. Giving children medicine is the most common method. However, there are some precautions when taking medicine. The following is an introduction on whether newborns should take medicine before or after feeding.

If the instructions for the medicine do not specify that it should be taken on an empty stomach, it is generally recommended that the baby be given the medicine half an hour to an hour after breastfeeding. The baby will vomit if he takes the medicine right after breastfeeding.

Suggestions: It is best to feed your baby between two feedings. The baby's stomach is already bloated right after feeding, and if he takes some medicine, he will definitely vomit it out.

Precautions for newborns taking medicine:

1. Pay special attention to the dosage of your baby's medication. Do not give your baby an overdose of medication, and do not give your baby adult medications such as antipyretics, cold medicines, etc. for the sake of convenience.

2. When giving medicine to infants or babies who cannot swallow tablets, the tablets and pills should be ground into powder. If it is a capsule, the medicine in the capsule should be poured out and the dosage should be distributed. When giving the medicine to your baby, dissolve the medicine powder in a small amount of warm water or sugar water, and then feed it to your baby. The medicine can be fed into the baby's mouth using a dropper.

3. When giving your baby oily medicines such as cod liver oil, you can drop it directly into the baby's mouth and then feed him some sugar water. You can also drop the medicine on solid foods such as biscuits and bread, give it to your baby, and then feed some water to help your baby swallow it smoothly.

4. When feeding medicine, hold the baby up, put on a bib, use a small spoon or small medicine cup to hold the medicine, and feed it slowly from the corner of the baby's mouth. It is best if the baby is willing to drink the medicine on his own when fed with a spoon. If the baby is uncooperative, you can use a spoon to gently press one side of the tongue to force the baby to swallow the medicine. If the baby refuses to open his mouth, you can gently pinch his cheeks to open his mouth slightly, feed the medicine in, and then release your fingers after the baby swallows it. Parents must not force large amounts of medicine into the baby's mouth, as this may cause the baby to choke or suffocate.

5. When the baby feels nauseous and wants to vomit, stop feeding the medicine and gently pat the child's chest and back to relieve the feeling of blockage in the throat. At the same time, divert the baby's attention and continue to feed the medicine after the condition improves.

6. No medicine can be mixed with breast milk and fed at the same time. The feeding method of Chinese medicine is the same as that of Western medicine.

7. Parents should try to train their babies to take medicine voluntarily or encourage children to take medicine by themselves. Parents should patiently explain the instructions to their children before taking the medicine and must not treat them roughly.
