Is dental pit and fissure sealing good?

If we observe our teeth carefully, we will find that there are many pits and fissures on our big teeth, and these pits and fissures are the easiest to retain debris, so when brushing your teeth, you must brush this area carefully, so as to prevent caries from eating our teeth. Some people may have tooth decay, and they will choose to fill the pits and fissures during treatment. So is dental pit and fissure sealing good?

1What does dental pit and fissure sealing mean?

Whether it is deciduous teeth or permanent teeth, there will be many pits and fissures on the large teeth at the back of the mouth. Normally, these pits and fissures easily retain food residues and are an important factor in the occurrence of oral caries.

Dental pit and fissure sealing is the use of an organic polymer material to fill the pits and fissures on the teeth, protecting the tooth enamel from erosion by bacteria and food debris, thereby protecting the teeth.

2 Benefits of Pit and Fissure Sealant

Pit and fissure sealant is a method of applying the sealant material to the pits and fissures of the occlusal surface and buccal and lingual surface of the crown without damaging the tooth tissue. When it flows into and penetrates the pits and fissures, it solidifies and hardens to form a protective barrier covering the pits and fissures, which can prevent the erosion of the tooth by cariogenic bacteria and acidic metabolites, thereby preventing pit and fissure caries.

3 Disadvantages of Pit and Fissure Sealant

The most important part of pit and fissure sealing is bonding, and the effectiveness of bonding depends on how well the doctor isolates moisture during the operation. If the moisture-proof effect is not good, the adhesion will be poor, and the pit and fissure sealant will fall off more easily. Once the pit and fissure sealant falls off, the incidence of dental caries is higher than that of children who do not undergo pit and fissure sealant.

4 Should children undergo pit and fissure sealing?

It is still the most important thing to do pit and fissure sealing, because children are not as careful as adults in brushing their teeth, and their teeth are not completely calcified, so their teeth are prone to caries. Therefore, whether it is deciduous teeth or permanent teeth, it is very necessary to do pit and fissure sealing for children and protect their teeth in advance.

The best time for fissure sealing

Currently, the most common time to perform pit and fissure sealing is when a child's first permanent tooth has just erupted, usually a permanent molar at around 6 years old. Usually, the best effect of performing pit and fissure sealing on a child is within one year after the transverse molar has fully erupted.

For children under 6 years old, if there are deep pits and fissures on their deciduous teeth, they can undergo pit and fissure sealing when they are 3-4 years old. If a tooth has not suffered from caries for more than 4 years after eruption, or if a tooth has suffered from caries and has been filled, there is no point in sealing the pit and fissure.

6 Tips

Fissure sealing only seals the narrow pits and fissures on the teeth that are not easy to clean with a toothbrush. After the procedure, you still need to supervise your baby to brush his teeth well, which is the most fundamental measure.
