How to relieve cough, phlegm and asthma in children?

Most families now have only one baby. Whenever the child is sick, the parents are more anxious than the child. Children, in particular, often have symptoms of cold and cough. When the cough is severe, they may also have asthma. So how can we relieve cough, phlegm and asthma in children? Let me introduce it to you below!

Children with cough should first expectorate and relieve asthma before stopping cough:

When it comes to children's coughing, some anxious parents may take the initiative to buy cough suppressants for their children. Currently, most cough suppressants are central nervous system cough suppressants, such as those containing codeine or dextromethorphan. Some cough suppressants containing codeine are addictive and are not recommended for children. In addition, mild coughing is a protective reflex for children, which can clear foreign matter and sputum from the respiratory tract and does not necessarily require cough suppressants. Especially for children with chronic cough, if the treatment is always based on cough suppression, it may have adverse effects on the children.

Do not take cough suppressants at will until the cause of chronic cough is clear. The American College of Chest Physicians' "Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Cough in Pediatrics" states that cough suppressants should not be used in children under 14 years of age because they may cause serious consequences.

If a child coughs after having a cold and fever, parents should first determine whether it is a dry cough or a wet cough. Dry cough may be caused by inflammation in the throat. Remember to drink more water and it may heal soon. But a wet cough means there is phlegm. The cough may not be very severe, but it may come and go. If it lasts for more than one month, it is likely to turn into a chronic cough. Especially in the early stages of the illness, children, unlike adults, find it difficult to cough up phlegm, which is easy to be retained. If stronger cough suppressants are taken, the cough will be temporarily stopped, but the cilia on the tracheal mucosa will affect the phlegm transport function, causing phlegm to block the trachea and bronchi. Once the trachea is blocked, the condition will be aggravated, and young children may even suffocate.

Therefore, children with phlegm and cough should first receive expectorant treatment in the early stages, such as Western medicine containing ambroxol hydrochloride and Chinese medicine containing Fritillaria cirrhosa. The cough will naturally ease after the phlegm is eliminated. If the cough is accompanied by wheezing, you should first relieve the asthma and then consider cough suppressants. The best asthma reliever is a cough syrup containing clenbuterol hydrochloride. Do not simply suppress the cough first, so as not to aggravate or cause airway obstruction. In short, children with chronic cough should see a specialist in time to identify the cause, and parents should not blindly use medication to avoid delaying their children's condition.

After reading the editor’s introduction, I believe you have a clearer understanding of what to do if your child has symptoms of coughing and asthma! It should be noted that as parents, do not give your children any drugs indiscriminately. It is best to take your children to the hospital for treatment in time. When your child is sick, it is best to let him/her rest more and drink more water.
