Is it good or bad for children to sleep on pillows?

The bones of a child are relatively fragile after birth, so special attention needs to be paid. Sleep is one aspect that needs attention. Sleep is the time for a child's physical development. If the sleep is not good, it will greatly affect the child's physical development. I believe everyone knows that you need to sleep with a pillow, and there is a saying that it is not good for children to sleep with a pillow. So the following will introduce in detail whether it is good or bad for children to sleep with a pillow.

Whether or not a baby should use a pillow when sleeping is actually determined by the baby's age. The statements that babies need to use shaping pillows when sleeping or that babies do not need to use pillows when sleeping should not be believed. Generally speaking, newborns do not need to use pillows, but when babies who are six or seven months old are able to sit up, they need to start using pillows. In addition, the choice of pillow must also be very appropriate. It is recommended that the baby use a pillow made of pure cotton, and the pillow should be of moderate hardness and appropriate height. These need to be determined by the baby's parents based on the baby's own situation.

The pillow is the main bedding that maintains the normal position of the head and neck during sleep, and can maintain the normal physiological curvature of the cervical spine. This physiological curvature not only ensures the balance of the external cervical spine muscles, but is also very important for maintaining the physiological and anatomical state of the spinal canal. If the pillow is used improperly, it will not only cause the neck muscles to lose external balance, but also directly affect the size of the cervical spinal canal and the anatomical state of local tissues. Therefore, it must be given sufficient attention.

If you use a high pillow for a long time, it can often lead to recurrent stiff neck and cervical degeneration. If the pillow is too high, the head and neck will bend forward excessively, which can easily lead to imbalance inside and outside the spinal canal. In the long run, it can easily cause strain on the posterior muscles and ligaments of the cervical spine. The posterior wall of the dura mater sac in the spinal canal will be tightened and shifted forward, putting pressure on the spinal cord. Once obvious bone spurs are formed on the posterior edge of the vertebral body or the corresponding part of the strain, especially when the spinal canal is narrow, it is easy to compress the spinal cord, nerves and blood vessels, resulting in symptoms of cervical spondylosis. Therefore, sleeping with a high pillow is unscientific.

If you use a low pillow or no pillow for a long time, the head and neck may be in an over-extended state for a long time, which can easily lead to an increase in the lordotic curvature of the cervical spine. The muscles in front of the vertebral body and the anterior longitudinal ligament will become fatigued due to excessive tension, and may even cause chronic injury. At the same time, the yellow ligament behind the spinal canal can protrude forward into the spinal canal, increasing the pressure from the back. This over-extension state stretches the spinal canal while its volume becomes smaller, and the spinal cord and nerve roots become relatively shortened, and the volume of the spinal canal is saturated. If the nucleus pulposus of the cervical intervertebral disc protrudes or osteophytes are formed, symptoms of spinal cord or nerve root compression will appear. Therefore, sleeping with a low pillow is also unscientific.
