Symptoms of a ruptured eardrum in a baby

There is a tympanic membrane inside the ear, which can easily be perforated due to inflammation or bacterial infection, causing middle ear inflammation. When the baby's eardrum is found to be broken, it is acute at first. Parents need to give the child medicine to speed up the repair of the endocardial tissue and promote healing. During the recovery period, attention should also be paid to preventing infection.

There are two harms of eardrum perforation:

The first is that the protective function of the middle ear is damaged. The eardrum is the gateway to the middle ear, which separates the outer ear from the middle ear and protects the middle ear cavity. After perforation, external bacteria, sewage, and foreign matter can enter the middle ear through the perforation, inducing middle ear infection, causing infection and pus discharge, and the risk of forming cholesteatoma.

The second is that perforation causes hearing loss: sound first vibrates the eardrum, then transmits to the cochlea through the middle ear ossicular chain, and then causes nerve reflex to form hearing. After the eardrum is perforated, the effective vibration area of the eardrum is reduced, and the energy of external sound waves transmitted to the inner ear is weakened, resulting in hearing loss. Treatment of eardrum perforation: For patients with otitis media caused by eardrum perforation, it is best to repair the perforated eardrum if they are in good general health. The purpose of the operation is twofold. One is to eradicate the inflammation of the middle ear, and the other is to improve hearing. The degree of hearing improvement depends on whether the ossicular chain is intact and the inflation of the middle ear cavity. This operation is called myringoplasty or tympanoplasty, which is usually performed under local anesthesia; the wound in front of the ear is about one centimeter. If the ossicular fracture or erosion is found before or during the operation, the ossicular reconstruction should be performed at the same time; hospitalization generally does not exceed one week, depending on the condition of the middle ear inflammation. If it is a simple eardrum repair, it can sometimes be performed in an outpatient clinic.

If the perforation of the eardrum is not very large and there is no inflammation or infection, it can be repaired by itself. It is important not to blow your nose hard, and to keep water and any liquids, including medicines such as ear drops, from entering the external auditory canal. Allow it to heal on its own.

In addition to causing ear leakage and hearing impairment, perforation of the eardrum in chronic otitis media also poses a risk of forming cholesteatoma, so it is necessary to repair it. A ruptured eardrum can be repaired using the fascia of the temporal muscle next to the ear, with a success rate of over 90%. This myringoplasty or tympanoplasty can eliminate ear leakage and improve hearing.

In short, the causes of eardrum perforation are nothing more than accidents or diseases.
