How to treat red birthmarks on the newborn's eyelids

How to treat red birthmarks on the newborn's eyelids

Most red birthmarks appear on people's necks, but there are exceptions to the location of red birthmarks on some newborns, such as on their eyelids. Having a birthmark on the eyelids is a relatively dangerous thing. If you want to remove the birthmark in this area, there will be a very high risk, so if it does not affect any problems, it is best not to remove it, otherwise it will leave a large scar.

Before skin laser was widely used, birthmarks were mostly removed by electrocautery or freezing. Severe birthmarks required surgical excision and skin grafting, but both methods easily left scars. Now, pigment spot laser can selectively destroy pigments, and dye laser can target vascular lesions, and no scars will be left after treatment. Therefore, except for severe birthmarks that still require surgery, laser has become the best choice for birthmark removal.

For laser treatment of pigmented birthmarks, ruby laser is the best choice. The current concept is that treatment should be started as early as possible. For example, Ota's freckles usually require 4-5 treatments for children and 7-10 for adults, so it is better to remove them before melanin accumulates. However, birthmark treatment varies greatly. Some people have significant effects, while others may have slow progress. Therefore, you should give yourself and your doctor more time and fully evaluate before accepting treatment.

Vascular birthmarks are usually treated with dye lasers, but the effect and response are more difficult to predict. For example, port wine stains can be removed by laser light in layers. Usually, the effect is most significant after the first and second treatments, which can reach 50-60%. After that, the residual blood vessels become deeper and deeper, and the treatment effect will decrease. Usually, up to 7-10 treatments are required. Because strawberry hemangiomas are deeper in the tissue, lasers are used as auxiliary treatments and can only remove surface blood vessels. Generally, sclerosing agents or steroid injections, or even vascular embolization and surgical removal are required. The traditional concept is that strawberry hemangiomas will shrink naturally and do not need treatment. However, the result of delayed treatment is that the hemangiomas are not completely shrunk, leaving ugly scars. Therefore, the current concept is to recommend early treatment, even starting treatment at 6 months old.

Although laser treatment of birthmarks is effective, it is expensive and not suitable for every birthmark. It also requires laser removal. Parents should consult a professional doctor for an accurate diagnosis to determine the impact of the birthmark on the body and the need for removal.

However, many parents think that if their newborn baby has a birthmark under the eyelids, it may affect their vision development. So first of all, they should do a vision test. If there is no problem, it is best not to act rashly. Even if you want to remove the birthmark in this area, you should use more professional techniques.
