Child with protruding ears

Child with protruding ears

Protruding ears are a type of ear shape that everyone knows. Some people say that this type of ears represents good fortune for the child, while others say that children with such ears are smarter. In fact, there is no truth to this. Children's protruding ears are actually a type of ear deformity that can be treated through plastic surgery. The best treatment age is between five and six years old, and the operation is not very complicated. Of course, if the protruding ears are not very obvious, surgery is not necessary.

The best time for children to have protruding ears is between 5 and 6 years old

The medical term for protruding ears is transverse process deformity of the external ear, which is a common congenital malformation. Since protruding ears are caused by congenital ear hypoplasia, drug treatment is ineffective and only surgery is available for treatment. The ideal age for protruding ears surgery is 5 to 6 years old.

Protruding ears surgery is not very invasive. In order not to affect the normal psychological development of children, the surgery can usually be performed when they are 5-6 years old. The earlier the surgery is performed, the less pressure the child will suffer and the less affected their psychological development will be.

Local anesthesia is often used for protruding ears surgery. The operation usually takes 0.5-1 hour, and more complicated operations may take slightly longer. The method used depends on the extent of the auricular deformity. The commonly used method is: the doctor first designs a fixed point on the ear, and then makes a small incision behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then carved and bent back toward the skull. Nowadays, absorbable sutures are often used to maintain the shape of the ear. Another technique makes a similar incision behind the ear. Part of the skin is removed and the ear cartilage is fixed with sutures to keep it folded without removing the cartilage. Most patients are left with an inconspicuous scar behind the ear after surgery, which gradually fades over time.

After the operation, the patient's head should be fixed with dressings and bandages to ensure shaping and healing. It needs to be applied for three days and routine anti-infection treatment. After a few days, the dressing is removed and only a small bandage is used. At this time, follow the doctor's instructions. The sutures are usually removed in a week, and the ear should not be folded forward within a month to avoid pulling on the wound. Adults can return to work 5 days after surgery. Children can go back to school after a week but are advised to avoid physical activities.

The above are all effective corrective measures for protruding ears. I hope everyone can apply them correctly in life. Children's psychological endurance is very limited. Therefore, for the healthy growth of children, parents are advised to treat their protruding ears in a timely manner. I wish everyone a healthy life!
