Baby's gross motor development and IQ

Baby's gross motor development and IQ

The baby's physical development starts from some small aspects. In the beginning, he can't even complete larger movements. At this time, it is quite difficult to judge the child's IQ. However, the baby's gross motor development and IQ can be compared through some indicators, so as to have a general understanding of the child's situation. The characteristics of each period are different. So, what are the indicators of baby's gross motor development and IQ?

Grasp the key period of baby's gross motor development

0~3 months: lift your head

"One lift of the head, two lifts of the chest" means that when the baby is one month old, he can lift his head when lying on his stomach; when the baby is two months old, he can not only lift his head, but also leave his chest off the bed when lifting his head.

However, children's gross motor development occurs at different times. If your child still cannot lift his head at around 2-3 months old, don't worry. Consider whether your child is not spending enough time lying down.

At this time, you can let your baby lie on his stomach on the bed and use things that interest him to attract him to look up. Lying on your stomach not only promotes the development of the neck and back muscles, making it easier to raise your head, but also promotes the brain's control over motor functions by stimulating the coordination of muscles throughout the body.

Babies usually learn to lift their heads when they are 3 to 4 months old, accounting for 80% of the time, but some babies may learn later, which is normal. As long as the baby keeps trying hard to do this action, the mother does not need to worry. The most important thing is that the mother should pay attention to the baby's development process and give the baby some help.

【Kind tips】:

1. When you start training your prone position, do it once a day for 1 to 2 minutes each time.

2. Be careful not to let your baby lie prone right after eating; your baby’s cervical spine is not fully developed yet, so the time for lifting the head should not be too long; after the game, let your baby lie on his back to rest for a while.

4~6 months: Rolling over

When your baby often lifts his feet, falls sideways naturally, and twists his lower body, it means that your baby has begun to learn to turn over.

Babies start learning to roll over around 4 to 6 months after birth, and the peak period for rolling over is at 5 months. If the baby can lift his legs and twist his waist with enough strength, he can easily turn over. If the baby cannot switch between lying down and prone positions freely at 6 months, more guidance is needed.

You can use toys to guide the child. Place the toy on one side of the child but out of his reach. The child will fall over to get the toy. When he cannot reach it even if he stretches his hands hard, he will fall prone again if he uses his whole body to do something. Frequent rolling helps develop the comprehensive ability of muscles and joints.

【Kind tips】:

1. When training your baby to turn over, don’t rush. Only when the baby shows signs of wanting to roll over should you try playing the rolling game with him.

2. When playing rolling games with your baby, do not place hard objects on the bed to avoid hurting the baby or causing the baby to accidentally swallow them.

7~8 months: Sitting alone

Typically, most babies learn to sit independently by the time they are 7 to 8 months old. At the beginning, the baby leans forward and needs to use both hands to support his body, and he will fall over after sitting for a while. Gradually, the baby's balance ability develops and he can sit upright without the support of his hands.

By 8 months, your baby is sitting up better and better, and can even lean forward to grab toys.

However, if the baby is 9 months old and cannot sit up without support, and cannot stand by himself with the help of a chair, it means that there is a problem with motor development.

【Kind tips】:

In order to help the baby learn to sit steadily, the mother can play a pulling game with the baby: first let the baby lie flat, pull the baby up slowly with your hands, and then restore the baby to the lying position after a few seconds. This can effectively enhance the baby's waist strength.

As the baby grows older, you can let the baby sit steadily by leaning on a cushion or the baby's body. With gradual practice, the baby will be able to sit steadily.

But please note: please do not force any exercises on your baby, and do them according to the baby's physical development.

7~9 months: Learning to crawl

7 to 9 months is the critical period for babies to learn to crawl. Parents should try to seize this period to teach their babies to crawl. In the process of learning to crawl, the baby's willingness is particularly important.

For babies, crawling is the best whole-body exercise. Lifting the head and neck while crawling can exercise the neck muscles. At the same time, the chest and abdomen are off the ground, and the limbs support the weight of the body, which also exercises the muscles of the chest, waist, abdomen, back and limbs. It not only promotes bone growth and ligament flexibility, but also lays the foundation for standing and walking.

【Kind tips】:

A small number of babies can stand directly without crawling, which is normal, but mothers should not artificially stifle the baby's crawling ability and make the baby stand and walk.

9-12 months: Standing and walking

Generally, babies can slowly learn to stand with support around 9 to 12 months. When babies first start learning to stand, they usually use furniture that they can reach to support themselves. Gradually, they will be able to use their hands and feet to stand up. When the strength of their feet develops and they can use the entire sole of their feet to support their weight, they will be able to stand firmly.

If your baby is 18 months old, he needs help from people around him when sitting down and cannot stand up by himself using the coordination of his arms and legs. If your baby cannot walk independently, you need to be extra vigilant and take him to the doctor for check-up promptly.

【Kind tips】:

1. During the period of gross motor development, the baby needs encouragement from mom and dad at any time. The encouragement and companionship of mom and dad are very important.

2. There are individual differences in the baby's gross motor development. Mothers should not pursue early development too much, nor should they worry too much because their baby is slower than other babies. As long as the baby is within the growth curve, there is no need to worry too much.

3. Do not force your baby to do any action. The mother can use teasing methods to make the baby perform certain actions spontaneously, but do not intervene artificially and force the baby's body to make certain movements.

4. As the baby's gross motor skills develop, his range of activities increases. Parents should carefully check all safety hazards at home to avoid accidents.
