How to treat viral cold and fever in children

The change of solar terms often causes many children to catch colds. There are many types of colds, and viral colds are the most common. Many children will also develop a fever after catching a viral cold. So how should we treat children when they have a viral cold and fever?

Common treatments for viral colds

If the viral cold is not complicated by bacterial infection, the course of the disease is about 7 to 10 days. Drink plenty of water and get enough rest, and the disease will heal on its own without treatment. Taking anti-cold medicines and symptomatic medications can shorten the course of the disease and relieve symptoms such as fever, headache, nasal congestion, runny nose, and body aches.

1. Basic treatment

Treatment method: dispel wind and relieve exterior symptoms. The main acupoints are the hand Taiyin meridian, hand Yangming meridian and Du meridian. The main points are Lieque, Hegu, Dazhui, Taiyang and Fengchi.

The main acupoints are operated using the filiform needle drainage method. For wind-cold colds, moxibustion is performed on the Dazhui point; for wind-heat colds, pricking and cupping are performed on the Dazhui point. Among the paired acupoints, Zusanli is used with the tonifying method or the balanced tonifying and draining method, Shaoshang and Weizhong are used with the pricking and bleeding method, and the remaining acupoints are used with the draining method. Fang Yi's Meaning: Cold is caused by external evil invading the lung defense. Taiyin and Yangming are exterior and interior to each other, so Lieque and Hegu of the hand Taiyin and hand Yangming meridians are used to eliminate the evil and relieve the exterior. The Du meridian controls the body's yang energy. Warm moxibustion on Dazhui can promote yang and dispel cold. Bloodletting can clear away heat evil. Fengchi is the meeting point of the Foot Shaoyang Meridian and the Yangwei Meridian. "Yangwei is associated with cold and heat diseases", so Fengchi can not only dispel wind evil, but also clear the head when combined with the temples.

2. Other treatments

① For cupping method, select Dazhui, Shenzhu, Dazhui and Feishu points. Leave the cups for 15 minutes before removing them, or use flash cupping. This method is suitable for colds caused by wind and cold.

② For the blood pricking and cupping method, select Dazhui, Fengmen, Shenzhu and Feishu. After disinfection, prick them with a three-edged needle to allow natural bleeding. After the bleeding color turns lighter, add a fire cup to the acupoint, leave the cup for 10 minutes, then remove the cup, clean the local area and disinfect the needle hole again. This method is suitable for wind-heat colds.
