What are the symptoms of sinusitis in teenagers?

If we do not observe the child's sinusitis in time, or we do not understand the child's sinusitis symptoms, then the child's sinusitis is not under control in time and it is easy to aggravate the child's disease, or even cause too much impact on the child's disease. After the child's sinusitis occurs, many children always pick their noses. In fact, this is caused by the itchy nostrils caused by the child's sinusitis. So what are the symptoms of sinusitis in teenagers?

Acute sinusitis

①Acute sinusitis develops rapidly, with headache as the main symptom in adults and systemic symptoms as the main symptom in adolescents. Symptoms include high fever, dehydration, lack of energy, rapid breathing, refusal to eat, and in severe cases, irritability and convulsions. It is also often accompanied by symptoms of respiratory tract infection, such as sore throat and cough.

② Local symptoms such as nasal congestion, unilateral or bilateral purulent rhinorrhea, and headache. For example, in patients with frontal sinusitis, the headache is more severe when getting up and in the morning, and lighter in the afternoon. Sometimes there is swelling and pain in the forehead, which worsens when coughing or blowing the nose. There is obvious tenderness when examining the frontal sinus. Some teenagers complain of toothache or pain on one side of the cheek.

③Acute frontal sinusitis generally has similar symptoms to those in adults. If the infection is severe, it may invade the eye socket and cause conjunctival edema, and the eyeball may also shift downward. In acute ethmoid sinusitis, local symptoms are mostly not obvious. If the infection is severe, there may be redness and swelling at the inner canthus. Acute sinusitis in adolescents may sometimes be accompanied by acute otitis media, maxillary osteomyelitis, bloody nasal discharge or joint pain.

Chronic sinusitis

① Local symptoms: intermittent or frequent nasal congestion, runny nose is mainly purulent or mucous, often hanging on the upper lip. Sometimes the mucus flows back into the pharynx, but there is no runny nose symptom. Sometimes nose bleeding or symptoms of nasal vestibule eczema such as redness, erosion, and exudation in the nasolabial groove may occur. Headache and olfactory disturbance are less common.

② Systemic symptoms: Adolescents may have mental depression, irritability, poor appetite, weight loss, poor development, low fever, etc. Because the purulent secretions in the nose flow backwards or are swallowed, the children may show symptoms of gastrointestinal dysfunction such as coughing, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

③ Symptoms of concurrent or secondary diseases: Sinusitis infection can spread easily, and the inflammation invading adjacent organs can lead to maxillary osteomyelitis, pharyngitis, chronic otitis media, cervical lymphadenopathy, conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, etc.; due to the poor protection function of the throat, secretions can easily choke into the trachea and bronchi and cause lower respiratory tract infection. Chronic sinusitis may also cause secondary anemia, rheumatism, joint pain, gastrointestinal or kidney diseases, susceptibility to colds and abdominal pain around the navel.

If a child suffers from sinusitis, then the child must be treated in time. If you don’t know the symptoms of your child’s sinusitis, then you must diagnose the child in time. Observe the child’s symptoms from these symptoms to see if the child has sinusitis. If the child has sinusitis, the child should be given anti-inflammatory drugs in time. If the child’s sinusitis is severe, surgical treatment is required.
