What causes dry and cracked skin in newborns?

The skin of a normal newborn is warm, smooth and elastic, not rough, dry or even cracked. If the baby's skin is cracked, mothers should pay attention, because the skin of a newborn is thinner and cannot lock in moisture, and it is easy to evaporate and become dry. In addition, the newborn does not have the ability to secrete enough sebum to protect the skin. When the sebum is very little, the skin will become rough and cracked. If the mother does not replenish the baby with water in time, the arrival of dry and cold air are important reasons for causing the baby's skin to become cracked.

1. Thin and tender skin. A baby's skin is only 1/3 as thick as an adult's, so any stimulation may cause discomfort to the baby's skin. For example, changes in climate, changes in clothing thickness and material, etc., can all cause damage to the baby's skin.

2. Less sebum secretion. From birth to about 2 months, the baby's sebum secretion will be relatively vigorous due to the protection of hormones obtained from the mother during the fetal period. But after this period of time, the original "protective shield" gradually disappears, and the baby's sebum secretion will decrease rapidly, making it easy to become dry and rough.

3. High water demand. Babies have a high density of sweat pores and are often very active, which causes a large amount of water evaporation from their bodies and increases their demand for water. If the baby's skin is not replenished in time, problems will easily occur.

Although we cannot change the baby's internal regulatory function, we can provide external care. For example, when the weather changes suddenly, you can replenish the baby with water in time, clean the baby's skin without using irritating cleaning products, and use mild baby skin care products to prevent the occurrence of diaper rash. In summer, you should protect your baby from the sun to avoid direct sunlight that may damage his skin.
