What to do if your baby's hand is scalded and broken

What to do if your baby's hand is scalded and broken

In daily life, parents must pay attention to some things that children come into contact with, such as kettles or hot water, which may cause children to be suddenly scalded if they touch them. Blisters and broken skin will appear in an instant after the baby's hands are scalded, so at this time, it is necessary to do a good job of on-site processing and remedial methods, and cooperate with professional treatment, so that recovery can be faster and skin scars can be avoided.

How to deal with baby burns

1. On-site processing

(1) Move the injured child away from heat sources as quickly as possible, such as removing burning clothing.

(2) If the injury is not particularly serious and conditions permit, parents should immediately rinse the child's wound with cold water and keep the child's airway open.

(3) If the injured child shows signs of irritability, bluish face and lips, or increased heart rate, it is possible that the child is having respiratory obstruction. Once the doctor has confirmed this, he or she should decisively intubate or perform tracheotomy and oxygen inhalation to ensure that the child can breathe smoothly.

2. Fluid rehydration method

(1) Fluids are infused into the child by inserting a catheter around a small vein. Strict aseptic techniques should be maintained during this process.

(2) Adjust the order of fluid replacement in a timely manner according to blood volume, acid-base balance and electrolyte balance in the blood.

(3) The rate of fluid replacement should be adjusted in a timely manner according to urine volume and various laboratory test indicators. If a large amount of 10% glucose is infused, the child's blood sugar should be monitored immediately.

(4) If the hemoglobin and myoglobin levels in the child's urine are higher than normal, measures should be taken to increase urine volume and alkalize urine to protect kidney function.

3. Wound treatment

(1) For relatively minor burns, treatment, pain relief and infection prevention can be carried out in the outpatient clinic. In addition, the doctor will determine whether to inject tetanus toxoid and antibiotics based on the actual situation.

(2) If the injured part is easy to bandage, such as the child’s trunk or limbs, then you can apply some burn medicine and bandage it with sterile gauze.

(3) If the injured area is a sensitive skin area such as the face, neck, or perineum, you can apply comfrey oil, burn ointment, or iodine solution to the wound. Be careful to keep it clean and avoid your baby scratching the wound.

TIPS: Precautions

(1) If the surrounding temperature is too high or the bandaged area is too large, the child is likely to have a fever or convulsions. Therefore, it is best not to bandage a large area of burns. Only some restraint and fixation are needed. If the burn area is small, such as the limbs, then it is best to bandage it.

(2) During skin grafting surgery, the skin extracted from the child should not exceed 0.3 mm; and the grafted area should be fixed and protected, and the child should not be allowed to touch it at will.

(3) If you use medication, be sure to pay attention to the area where the medication is applied to avoid excessive absorption of the medication and poisoning. In addition, some drugs may irritate healthy skin, causing inflammation, rash, or even pyoderma.

(4) The wound will be very itchy when healing. At this time, be sure to prevent the child from scratching the skin to avoid infection or scarring.

(5) If the child suffers from deep burns, escharectomy and skin grafting should be performed as soon as possible after the condition stabilizes.

(6) Children are extremely sensitive to pain, so caregivers must be extra patient during wound cleaning to minimize pain.
