Why does my baby have tears and mucus?

We parents have all experienced this situation, that is, the baby's eyes will have tears and a lot of eye mucus when they are young. Many parents do not know what is going on with their children, and some are particularly worried, fearing that it will have bad consequences for the baby's eyes. There are many reasons for this situation. What is going on when the baby has tears and a lot of eye mucus? Let us understand it through the introduction below, and hope it will be helpful to parents.

1. Irritation of eyelashes. Normal children, when they are 2-3 months old, may have some white eye mucus on their eyes when they wake up in the morning. This is because the eyelashes tend to grow inwards during this period, and the friction and stimulation of the eyeballs produces eye mucus. Generally, around the age of one, eyelashes will grow outward naturally and the eye mucus will gradually decrease. Usually you can wipe it clean with a warm towel, or you can use a cotton swab dipped in 2% boric acid solution and gently wipe it from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner.

2. There is accumulated heat in the child's body, which is commonly known as "getting angry". It is often accompanied by symptoms such as intolerance to heat, easy sweating, dry stool, and thick tongue coating. It is recommended to feed the baby more water on a regular basis, and take some Chinese medicine to clear away heat and fire, and to help digestion and relieve stagnation if necessary, or go to the hospital for treatment.

3. Bacterial infection. If a child suddenly has a lot of yellow eye mucus, and his eyes become congested and red, it may be because bacteria have invaded the lacrimal sac, multiplied, and festered inside. The pus fills the entire lacrimal sac and cannot be excreted, so it accumulates in the corners of the eyes. This may lead to keratitis, in which the cornea may turn from black to white to form white spots. If not treated in time, it will affect the child's vision development. If this happens, do not use eye drops without authorization and go to the hospital for treatment immediately. In addition, personal hygiene should be emphasized. Do not share washbasins, towels and other bathing items with others to prevent cross infection.

4. The baby's nasolacrimal duct is underdeveloped. The nasolacrimal duct of infants is shorter, the valve at the opening is underdeveloped, and it is located at the inner canthus of the eye. This prevents tears from draining smoothly, leading to accumulation of eye mucus. Parents can massage their baby's nose bridge slightly with their hands every day to help keep the nasolacrimal duct open.

Through the above situations, we know why the baby's eyes are tearing and having a lot of eye mucus. After the above situations occur, we must actively regulate and treat the baby, especially in normal times, do not let the baby get angry. If the baby's condition is not good, we must pay attention to it and go to the hospital for examination with the baby.
