Causes of nasal congestion and phlegm in newborns

As we all know, nasal congestion and phlegm are common symptoms. Although nasal congestion and phlegm will not threaten our lives, they can easily make us feel uncomfortable and affect our breathing. Therefore, we should pay attention to symptoms such as nasal congestion and phlegm in daily life. If a newborn has nasal congestion and phlegm, he does not know how to deal with it, and needs the help of parents.

The nasal mucosa of newborns and infants is thin and tender. When they are sick or caught a cold, or are exposed to external stimuli (sensitive to external substances such as pollen, air, clothing, etc.), it is easy for the nasal mucosa to become congested, swollen, and produce secretions. In addition, the lumens of the upper respiratory tract (nasal cavity, oral cavity and throat) are relatively narrow, and even a little secretion can cause nasal congestion. When the baby's nasal cavity is blocked, it may cause a "snoring" sound, like there is phlegm, so you can check the baby's nasal cavity.

Sometimes, due to increased natural secretions in the mouth and throat, such as excessive saliva in babies who are not very good at swallowing, and the underdeveloped respiratory diaphragm in the chest cavity, when the respiratory air flows in and out of the trachea, air and water mix, producing respiratory murmurs, which sound like phlegm. This condition has no adverse effect and will improve with development. If it lasts a long time and is very severe, especially if it occurs during sleep, it may be laryngeal cartilage hypoplasia and you need to see a doctor. (If you are lacking certain nutrients during pregnancy, or your baby is lacking calcium or vitamins, you should pay attention to preventing upper respiratory tract infections after diagnosis)

After feeding, there is milk residue in the mouth, which will be fermented by bacteria in the mouth. The baby's saliva and milk fermentation products mix, creating the illusion of phlegm.

We know that nasal congestion and phlegm can cause many problems to patients. If a newborn baby has this symptom, it must be treated in time. Since newborns have relatively weak constitutions, parents should pay special attention to their care to avoid causing breathing difficulties due to nasal congestion.
