What are the symptoms of separation anxiety disorder?

Those who have babies at home may have had this experience: when they are about to go out, the babies always cry and make a fuss, and are unwilling to leave until the parents leave; some babies are fine when the parents do not leave when going to kindergarten, but as soon as the parents say they want to leave, the babies will lose control of their emotions and cry. This is actually a child with separation anxiety disorder, so what are the specific manifestations of this anxiety disorder?

Symptoms of separation anxiety disorder:

Separation anxiety is age-inappropriate, excessive, and behaviorally impairing anxiety that occurs when one is separated from an attachment figure. It is one of the most common emotional disorders in preschool children.

It mostly occurs before the age of 6. Its characteristics are excessive anxiety when separated from relatives or leaving his familiar environment, worrying about accidents to relatives or himself being abducted; worrying about separation from parents or other attachment figures; not willing to go to school or kindergarten for fear of separation; persistent and inappropriate fear of being alone. When separation from attachment figures is expected, excessive and recurrent distress will be immediately shown, such as crying, temper tantrums, indifference or social withdrawal. Some patients even show some physical symptoms: nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach pain, general discomfort, etc. The anxiety of such children is more severe than the emotional response of normal children to separation, and their social functions will also be significantly affected.

How to prevent:

1. Cultivate children's independence: Parents should pay attention to cultivating children's independence from an early age. Before going to kindergarten, make sure that children can independently complete eating, dressing, washing hands, going to the toilet, etc.

2. Use love and care to resolve children’s negative psychology: Teachers should be kind, patient and smiling. Love is a must for kindergarten teachers. They should also be familiar with the emotional expressions of each child when they come to the kindergarten, and pay more attention to children who are unwell or have severe separation anxiety.

We should pay more attention to cultivating our baby's independence ability, so as to effectively avoid the occurrence of separation anxiety. When you go out alone, you can tell your baby that you are going out and say goodbye to him/her. It is also best to buy a small gift for your baby when you come back. This way, the baby will really want you to go out, and you can effectively avoid separation anxiety.
