How to collect urine for infant urine test

Many parents have had this kind of confusion in their daily lives. They take their babies to the hospital for a physical examination. The doctor asks the baby to collect urine for examination. For older children, they have the awareness of peeing, but for younger babies, the baby's urination and defecation are usually uncontrolled, and parents don't know when the baby will urinate. Therefore, collecting urine is the most troublesome thing for many parents. So how to collect urine for baby urine test?

How to collect urine for baby urine test?

According to the urine specimen collection conditions, one-time urine specimens can be divided into morning urine and random urine.

For urine testing, the first urine sample in the early morning is usually the most ideal, because morning urine is more concentrated and acidic, and formed elements such as blood cells, epithelial cells and casts are more stable in an acidic environment. It can also avoid dietary interference and ensure the accuracy of chemical composition determination.

However, it is difficult for children to completely control urination. If the morning urine sample cannot be tested within 1 hour, fresh random urine should be selected to ensure the accuracy of the urine test results. For older children who can cooperate, try to collect midstream urine for testing.

If you collect urine samples for testing of urine red blood cell morphology: you should pay attention to avoiding drinking water and eating large amounts of fluids from the night before the sample is collected until the sample is collected, to prevent the urine specific gravity from being too low, which will affect the test results.

If the doctor requires the child to collect urine for 24 hours for relevant examination: the child should be arranged to urinate once and discard the urine before starting the timing, and the urine volume should be collected at any time thereafter, and the child should urinate once before the end of the time and count it into the total amount.

The urine container should be clean, dry, and contain preservatives as required. When submitting the urine sample for final testing, be sure to mix it thoroughly, measure it, and keep approximately 20 ml of the sample for testing.

The baby cannot control his urination. Under normal circumstances, the baby's daily urine output is 400 to 500 mL, and he urinates 20 to 25 times a day.

However, the amount of urine a baby produces at a time is relatively small. Often, the baby has finished urinating just when the parents are about to collect it or have only collected a little bit. A routine urine test often requires several collections to complete.

How to get it?

For small babies, a disposable baby urine collection bag can be used. The bag should be aimed at the urethral opening and attached to the perineum. This requires parents to check frequently whether the baby has urinated, and remove the bag in time for testing if the baby has urinated. If the baby can cooperate, the urethral opening and vulva can be cleaned before the specimen is collected to avoid contamination.

Notice

Parents should not think that they can just put the urine collection bag on and ignore it and wait for the baby to urinate.

The urine collection bag cannot be applied for too long, otherwise it will cause damage to the baby's skin. Parents need to check the urine collection bag at any time after applying it. If there is no urination after about 20 minutes, it should be removed, and the baby should be given some milk or water, and then replaced with another one.

If the baby can defecate independently, it is best to collect fresh, clean midstream urine for routine urine examination. Clean the urethral opening and vulva before collecting the specimen. Wait for the baby to start urinating for 3 seconds and then collect the urine and collect it in the specimen box.
