What to do if a child has a fever of 395 degrees

What to do if a child has a fever of 395 degrees

In life, many babies' fevers will catch their mothers off guard. After mothers use a thermometer to measure the baby's fever, they will give the baby antipyretics. If the fever does not go down after holding the baby for a period of time, mothers will give the baby another antipyretic medicine. In fact, baby fevers are divided into low fever and high fever. For low fevers, physical cooling methods can be used, and for high fevers, medicines must be taken. So what should I do if a child has a fever of 39.5 degrees?

1. Don’t panic if your baby has a fever

When the child's temperature is below 38.5℃, you don't need to take antipyretics. It is best to drink warm water in small amounts and multiple times, and pay close attention to changes in the condition, or use physical cooling methods. If the temperature exceeds 38.5℃, you can take antipyretics. Currently, commonly used antipyretics include children's Tylenol, Motrin, etc., but it is best to use them under the guidance of a pediatrician.

2. Physical cooling methods

In the absence of direct cold wind, taking off too much clothing or loosening clothes is conducive to heat dissipation. Give children a warm bath, mainly in places where large blood vessels are distributed, such as the forehead, neck, armpits, groin and thigh roots, which can achieve a cooling effect. If the hands and feet are cold, you can soak the child's hands and feet in warm water to help improve circulation, but be careful to avoid burns;

3. Medication for fever

There are many causes of fever in children. When the pathogen is unknown, it is best not to abuse anti-inflammatory drugs. If anti-inflammatory drugs are abused, it can cause damage to the liver and kidney function of children, increase the resistance of pathogens to drugs, and be detrimental to physical recovery. It is best to treat fever in children under the guidance of a doctor and prescribe the right medicine according to the condition to achieve the effect of curing the disease.

4. Diet for fever

Drink plenty of water. If you are unwilling to drink water, you can drink fresh fruit juice instead. Eat easily digestible food, mainly porridge, soup, and noodles during the illness.

5. Medicines for fever that should be kept at home

Children's Tylenol and Motrin have better antipyretic effects. After taking them, you will sweat a lot and the fever will go down. However, you should not take them too often and must take them according to the instructions.

Applying a fever-reducing patch on the forehead or back of the neck is also very effective in reducing fever.

The antipyretic suppository is inserted into the anus and has a good antipyretic effect, but it is not easy to operate. Sometimes the baby cries loudly during use and the suppository comes out.

Home treatment measures: Don't rush to reduce the fever. If the doctor determines that you just have a cold, it is best not to rush to take antipyretic and analgesic drugs within your tolerance range. Fever is one of the body's mechanisms to fight infection. Our body mobilizes its own defense system to kill foreign pathogens by raising body temperature, thereby shortening the duration of the disease and enhancing the body's immunity.

[Cold compress] If the high fever is unbearable for the child, cold compress can be used to help lower the body temperature. Place a cold wet towel on your forehead, wrists, and calves, and cover other parts of your body with clothing. When the cold compress reaches body temperature, it should be changed and repeated until the fever subsides. You can also wrap ice cubes in a cloth bag and place it on your forehead.

[Hot compress] If the body temperature is lower than 38.5 degrees, you can use hot compress to reduce the fever. Use a hot, wet towel to repeatedly wipe the child's forehead and limbs to dissipate heat from the body until the fever subsides. However, if the body temperature rises above 39°C, do not use hot compresses to reduce the fever to prevent the body temperature from continuing to rise.

[Take a bath] Sometimes, taking a warm bath is the most relaxing thing. It can also help relieve fever symptoms. Babies should take a bath in warm water, but the bath time should not be too long to avoid causing fatigue.

[Replenish fluids] When a child has a fever, they sweat to dissipate the heat; but when you have a high fever, your body loses too much water and closes its sweat glands to prevent further water loss, which prevents your body from dissipating heat. The solution is to replenish fluids, drink small amounts of boiled water and fruit and vegetable juice frequently, as fruit and vegetable juice is rich in vitamins and minerals. Avoid foods that are difficult to digest during a fever until your condition improves.
