What common diseases are associated with children not speaking?

Children's speech is generally regular, and this is a developmental process, but there are differences in this development, some are early, some are late. However, if a child does not speak for a long time, it may involve some related diseases, including autism, mental retardation, hearing loss, and selective mutism. These are common diseases that cause children to not speak, and the various reasons are different situations.

Common diseases in general language development include: autism in children; mental retardation; hearing loss; and selective mutism.

① Childhood autism: It is a serious pervasive developmental disorder. Children have delayed language development since childhood, lack interpersonal demands, and cannot play social games with others, such as "finding friends", "hide and seek", and "peekaboo". Instead, they play their own games while others play their own games. They will not seek help when encountering difficulties, lack attachment to their caregivers, and have fixed and strange movement habits. ② Mental retardation: The language expression and comprehension abilities of these children are significantly behind those of children of the same age, but they will use gestures or body postures to express their wishes and will actively seek help when encountering difficulties. They are willing to communicate with children of the same age and relatives in a simple way, have a good attachment to their caregivers, and do not have stereotyped or strange movements. They have the desire to learn communication awareness, but their approach is often simple and intuitive.

③ Hearing loss: Children with no intellectual disability but speech disorders caused by hearing loss due to various reasons can make continuous progress in language by improving the degree of hearing loss. ④ Selective mutism: This type of children has no organic damage to their auditory organs and developmental organs. Their intelligence is well developed, and they have the ability to speak as they grow older. However, they have speech communication barriers due to various psychological factors. This is generally more common in girls and children who are timid, lack self-confidence, and are afraid of frustration. They often refuse to speak actively in crowded or public places or are accompanied by dullness, rigidity and reduced activity, but have difficulty speaking at home or in front of familiar relatives. Severe cases can be improved through treatment by psychologists and drugs.

These diseases warn parents to pay attention to their children's speech development. Do not ignore the late development of their children's speech, which may lead to some serious language disorders. Severe cases cannot even be treated with drugs alone. They may even need to ask a specialized psychologist to help their children solve language disorders. Parents must discover their children's situation in time and prescribe the right medicine.
