Reasons for diarrhea in babies over three months old

Generally speaking, for babies who are exclusively breastfed, the stool should be yellow in color and have a paste-like or ointment-like consistency. This is what a healthy baby's stool normally looks like in a day. Of course, if the stool occasionally looks a little less sticky and a little green, but has a sour taste but not smelly, it is also normal. Another normal baby defecates about 2 to 4 times a day.

If your baby normally has only 1 to 2 bowel movements a day, but this number suddenly increases to 5 to 6 times a day, you should consider whether the baby is sick. If the child has frequent bowel movements but is in generally good condition and has not lost weight, this does not indicate a disease. Of course, it is best to go to a professional hospital for treatment.

You can understand the digestion status of infants and young children by observing the stool characteristics. If the baby's stool has a strong odor, it means that the protein is not digested well. At this time, you should reduce the amount of milk appropriately or dilute the milk. If there is a lot of foam in the stool, it means that carbohydrates are not digested properly, and you must reduce or even stop feeding starchy foods. If the stool looks creamy, it indicates fat malabsorption and the intake of fatty foods should be reduced.

If a breastfed baby has diarrhea, do not wean him/her easily. At this time, you can shorten the time of each feeding and let the baby eat the first half of the milk. Because the first half of breast milk contains more protein, it is easy to digest and rich in nutrition, while the second half contains more fat and is difficult to digest. If necessary, the mother can drink a large glass of light salt water half an hour to an hour before breastfeeding to dilute the milk and then breastfeed the child.

If a child has diarrhea, mothers must pay attention and take the child to the hospital as soon as possible to see a professional doctor for examination and treatment. Normally, do not feed your children too greasy food. Try to feed them light food. Also, try to keep them warm as much as possible and do not let them catch cold.
