Cubitus varus in children

Cubitus varus in children

Parents will be extremely concerned and worried about any physical differences between their children and their peers. Among them, a small number of parents have found that their children have cubitus varus. Although cubitus varus will not cause serious harm to the child's life, it will affect the child's normal hand shape. In fact, elbow varus is a sequelae caused by the failure of children to recover properly after fracture. How should elbow varus be treated?

Cubitus varus, commonly known as "elbows turning inward", is one of the common long-term sequelae of elbow fractures in children. The most common cause of elbow varus is supracondylar fracture of the humerus, accounting for about 80%.

In addition, complete epiphysis separation of the distal humerus and medial condyle epiphysis injury, poor reduction of medial condyle fracture of humerus, old elbow dislocation, etc. can also cause cubitus varus deformity. Although it often does not exist or only has slight inconvenience in elbow movement, and children also have strong shaping ability during their growth and development, this disease cannot be alleviated or disappeared with age and corrected, which seriously affects the limb beauty and mental health of the children. With the improvement of living standards, people's requirements for beauty are getting higher and higher. In recent years, more and more children have requested surgery to correct their elbows.

When the family of the child considers the appearance deformity unacceptable, it is an indication for surgical correction. So when is the timing of surgical correction? Currently, experts unanimously agree that if there is no obvious sign of continued development of deformity 6 months after the child's elbow injury, corrective surgery can be considered. Distal humeral osteotomy is a common method for treating cubitus varus. There are also many reports on its internal fixation methods. The effective methods are Kirschner wire tension band fixation or plate fixation. Parents must know that surgery can only improve the appearance and reduce the impact on children's mental health.
