Is it necessary to test hearing of newborns?

We all know that hearing is a way for each of us to perceive the world, so hearing is very important to us. For newborns, many people may feel that there is no need to test their hearing, because as the baby grows up, it will be possible to tell at a glance whether the hearing is normal or not. But is it necessary to test hearing for newborns? Let me reveal it to you.

It is very necessary. Newborn hearing screening refers to the audiological examination performed on every newborn baby during hospitalization. According to the examination results, all subjects were divided into two groups: those who passed the screening and those who failed the screening.

Newborn hearing screening is an objective, rapid and non-invasive examination performed on newborns in their natural sleep or quiet state after birth using electrophysiological techniques such as otoacoustic emissions, automated auditory brainstem response and acoustic impedance. The test usually takes only 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Newborns should undergo the first hearing screening 48 hours after birth; those who fail the initial screening should undergo the first hearing screening around 42 days.

Undergo hearing reexamination; if the patient still fails the reexamination after 42 days, undergo a hearing diagnostic test in about 3 months. Children diagnosed with hearing loss should go to a hospital specialist department for appropriate medical intervention in a timely manner.

Benefits of newborn hearing screening

The reason for setting up newborn hearing screening is that sometimes when a baby is just born, many aspects of their body, including vision and hearing, are not fully developed, and it is impossible to judge the baby's internal development based on their own senses. Hearing screening for newborns helps to clearly understand the baby's hearing condition and find out whether the baby has hearing problems.

In addition, recognizing hearing from an early age is also beneficial to the baby's future healthy growth, both physically and mentally. If the screening results are not ideal, measures can be taken early to prescribe the right medicine. To prevent the remaining problems from becoming more and more out of control.

The above is what I want to introduce to you today about whether it is necessary to test the hearing of newborns, as well as some other related knowledge. I hope my sharing will be helpful to you. Hearing loss will not only affect the baby's intellectual development, but also affect the baby's mental health. Therefore, the editor believes that it is necessary to test the hearing of newborns.
