What to do if your baby has dark circles under his eyes

Another type of dark circles under the eyes may be caused by allergies in the baby. Allergies may cause slight dark circles under his eyes, which is called allergic dizziness.

If the dark circles are just caused by bruises, when the baby is uncomfortable, you can give him acetaminophen, or babies over 6 months old can also take ibuprofen. Be sure to pay attention to the appropriate dosage. If your baby has swelling under the eye, you can apply ice packs for 15 minutes a few times a day for the first 48 hours, provided he cooperates.

If you don't have ice packs at home, you can use a resealable plastic bag filled with ice cubes and water or some partially thawed frozen peas or corn. No matter which one you use, you need to wrap it in a towel or tissue before placing it on your baby's skin. You'll probably need to hold the cold pack on your baby the whole time, and you can read to him or play a quiet game during this time. Just gently place the ice pack around your baby's eyes, not directly on them.

You can use cold compresses to help reduce swelling, but there's nothing you can do about bruising. Of course, you can hug him more, kiss him, and comfort him. Most cases of dark or blue circles under the eyes will disappear within a week or 10 days. If they don't disappear after 14 days, you should take your child to see a doctor.
