What is going on if there are white particles in the child’s throat?

If white granular substances appear in the child's throat, it is usually caused by herpetic pharyngitis. This disease is mostly caused by intestinal viral infection. It is best to go to the hospital for relevant examinations and treatment in time. Don't be careless. You must take it seriously and actively treat it. It can effectively control the disease to prevent the disease from becoming more and more serious and causing serious impact on the child's health.

What are the white particles in the throat?

If there are often small white or yellow particles in the throat, and they have a foul odor when spit out, this may be tonsil stones. The white particles are caused by food residues or necrotic and shed cells that accumulate in the tonsil crypts, where bacteria multiply and the aggregates calcify. Sometimes they fall out on their own, and due to long-term accumulation they have a rotten and unpleasant smell.

Tonsillar stones are formed due to repeated attacks of tonsillitis, which leads to fibrosis of the crypt openings, limited drainage, and accumulation of cheesy substances formed by desquamated epithelium and bacterial fragments in the crypts. The small ones are like sand grains, and the large ones are like pigeon eggs. People with deep tonsil openings are particularly prone to tonsil stones. The symptoms of tonsil stones are as follows:

1. There is purulent infection around the stones, with symptoms such as sore throat, swollen and painful gums; in severe cases, there is difficulty in swallowing, slurred speech, increased saliva, and limited mouth opening. When there is an infection, people often experience bad breath.

2. The stones contain a large amount of sulfonamides and carry a large number of bacteria. When the stones are broken, they will emit sulfide gas with a smell similar to rotten eggs. Compared with the discomfort caused by the stones, the problem caused by this odor is more serious because it will cause patients to have embarrassing chronic bad breath.

3. Most of the stones are sunken into the tonsil crypts. Patients with tonsil stones often feel a foreign body sensation in the throat. Some patients may try to remove the stones with a cotton swab or fingers, which may damage the soft tissue tonsils and cause the stones to rupture and emit a foul odor.

How to remove tonsil stones

1. You can use your tongue to expel tonsil stones from your mouth. Simply lift your breasts forward, let your head fall back, and release them with your tongue.

2. There is another way to remove tonsil stones, which is to use your hands or a cotton swab to force it into the base of the tonsils from your mouth. However, removing tonsil stones in this manner may result in a gag reflex. Also, when attempting this removal procedure, you must make sure that your throat is suitable for anesthetic spray to avoid the gag reflex.

3. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after eating. Some stones are formed by food residues in the tonsil holes after eating, so be sure to rinse your mouth after eating. Rinsing your mouth not only improves the health of your teeth and gums, but it also helps prevent the formation of tartar.

4. Use an oral irrigator, such as a teeth washer (water sprayer). The dental irrigator used to clean the wound left by wisdom tooth extraction is particularly suitable for removing stones. It is gentler than other oral irrigators and the pressure of the water sprayed is relatively low.

5. For more stubborn and severe tonsils, use antibiotics to treat them. Penicillin or erythromycin can treat tonsil congestion but cannot eliminate the cause, which is food residue.

6. You may consider using laser treatment to remove tonsil stones. Laser therapy and curettage are effective but do not prevent stone regrowth.
