Why does a three-month-old baby snore when sleeping?

It is the wish of every mother that the baby can grow up healthily. Sometimes, if the baby has any abnormal conditions, the mother will be worried. A three-month-old baby should be able to eat and sleep, but some babies snore when they sleep, which makes the mother very anxious. In fact, there are many reasons why babies snore when they sleep, and it is not necessarily due to physical discomfort. Let’s understand why a three-month-old baby snores when sleeping.

Reasons why three-month-old babies snore

1. Milk stasis in infants

Some very young babies may snore sometimes. This is not a disease but is caused by milk congestion. Due to swallowing, some babies will have milk clots in their throats. On the one hand, it makes it difficult for the baby to feed smoothly. On the other hand, it makes the airway obstructed, causing the baby to snore while sleeping.

2. Muscle relaxation

For babies who occasionally snore while sleeping, it may be because the breathing-related muscles relax during sleep, especially the tongue muscles relax, causing the root of the tongue to droop slightly backwards, affecting the exhaust during exhalation; when the body position is changed, the position of the tongue is also changed, and the snoring disappears. In this case, there is no need to go to the hospital for treatment.

3. Swollen tonsils

Tonsils, also called tonsils, grow on both sides of the pharynx and have the function of defending and resisting the invasion of external pathogens. Some babies have overly enlarged tonsils, so that the tonsils on both sides almost touch each other, blocking the pharyngeal cavity and causing breathing difficulties. When they fall asleep, they will breathe through their mouths and make snoring sounds. In addition, tonsils are organs of the immune system. When the body's reactivity is disordered and resistance is reduced, the tonsils will also become inflamed and swollen.

4. Bronchitis

When the bronchi are stimulated by inflammation, the amount of sputum increases, but infants and young children lack the ability to cough and expel sputum. The sputum is transported to the throat by the vibration of the bronchial cilia and cannot be discharged, causing relative narrowing of the airway. When the air flows through, it vibrates and makes a snoring sound. The sound in this case can be heard even during the day.

However, if the baby only snores occasionally, there is no need for the mother to worry so much. It may be a sign that the baby is too tired from playing during the day. However, if the baby continues to snore for a long time, mothers should be vigilant and take the baby to a professional hospital for examination as soon as possible to find out the cause of the baby's snoring and prescribe the right medicine.
