Significance of neonatal hip ultrasound

Significance of neonatal hip ultrasound

B-ultrasound is a common medical examination method in daily life. It mainly uses some instruments to check problems inside people's bodies. Now many parents know that newborns will undergo hip ultrasound examination after birth. Many people don't know what the use of this kind of examination is and what its specific significance is. This has led to some doubts in many people's hearts. So what is the use of B-ultrasound examination of the hip joint of newborns?

How to perform B-ultrasound of the neonatal hip joint

In newborns with hip dysplasia, parents are most likely to first notice the asymmetry of their baby’s leg lines and then seek medical attention. For babies under six months old, B-ultrasound is now more commonly used for examination and measurement. Among the many classification methods, Graf method is the most practical. Graf's method divides infant hip joint sonographic findings into types I to IV based on qualitative and quantitative descriptions.

Type I (α>60°, β<77°); the hip joint is clinically and sonographically mature. The acetabular bone has an excellent contour, with the outer edge of the bone being sharply angled (Ⅰα, β<55°) or slightly blunted (Ⅰb, 5°<β<77°). The acetabular cartilage is narrow and triangular, providing good coverage of the femoral head.

Type II: The upper and outer edges of the bony acetabulum of this type of hip lack calcification, and the part with developmental defects in the bone dome contour is filled by the widening of the cartilage dome, covering the femoral head. It is divided into 4 types.

What is a pediatric hip ultrasound?

Ultrasound of the pediatric hip joint is mainly used to screen for congenital hip dysplasia, which is one of the common diseases in children. When the baby is born or during his growth, the hip joint is unstable and may cause acetabular dysplasia, hip subluxation, hip dislocation, etc.

The B-ultrasound examination of the neonatal hip joint is very necessary. It can be used to understand the baby's bone development and timely understand the relevant conditions of the neonatal hip joint. Therefore, it is an indispensable detection item. It is recommended that you perform this examination for your baby.
