Weaning at one and a half years old

Weaning at one and a half years old

Breast milk is the feeding method chosen by most women because the nutrients contained in breast milk are unmatched by any other food. In fact, breast milk no longer provides any nutrients to babies when they are five or six months old. However, some parents rely on this feeding method and are reluctant to wean their babies off breast milk. It is a bit late for a baby to be weaned at one and a half years old. What method should be used if the baby is weaned at one and a half years old? Here are several weaning methods introduced to parents.

1. So how to wean a one and a half year old baby?

1. Proceed step by step and make a natural transition. The timing and method of weaning depends on many factors. Every mother and baby feels differently about weaning, and the method chosen varies from person to person.

2. Quick weaning: If you have made adequate preparations and both you and your baby can adapt, the time for weaning is ripe and you can quickly wean your baby off breast milk. Especially with objective factors, if the mother has to go on a business trip for a period of time, it is very likely that the baby will be completely weaned in a few days. If the mother stops pumping milk after going to work, the daytime milk supply will soon stop.

3. Gradual weaning: If your baby is very dependent on breast milk, rapid weaning may make the baby uncomfortable. If you attach great importance to breastfeeding and are with your baby every day, you may feel a sense of loss if you wean suddenly. Therefore, you can adopt a gradual weaning method. Start by breastfeeding 6 times a day, then reduce to 5 times a day. Once both mother and baby are used to it, gradually reduce the number of times until breastfeeding is completely weaned.

2. Ten tricks for weaning babies aged one and a half:

1. Get up and dress before your baby wakes up, so that he doesn't have a chance to climb into bed to find his mother.

2. Change your normal daily routine, for example, try taking your baby out at the time when your baby usually wants to drink milk.

3. When the baby wakes up in the middle of the night to drink milk, the father or other family members will take care of him.

4. Let the father or other family members feed the baby with formula milk, or complementary foods or drinks that can replace breast milk.

5. Don’t expect successful weaning in a short period of time. Give your baby some time to adapt and let him learn to accept it slowly.

6. You can try to communicate with your baby and take the opportunity to praise other babies who have been weaned, and tell him: "You have grown up and don't need to drink your mother's milk anymore." If breastfeeding is suspended due to illness, you can also tell your baby and let him know the real reason why he can't continue to drink breast milk, to avoid him thinking that his mother does not love him and does not let him drink milk.

7. Gradually reduce the time of breastfeeding before bedtime. Stop as soon as the baby has had enough. Use storytelling, singing, etc. to divert the baby's attention.

8. Do not breastfeed for a long time. You can use the method of exchange to shorten the time he sucks milk.

9. Use new foods, whether snacks or drinks, to distract your baby from sucking breast milk.

10. When taking your baby out, do not wear clothes that are easy to breastfeed, and try to avoid changing clothes in front of him.

3. Tips:

Babies aged one and a half years should be weaned during a comfortable season, such as late spring or cool autumn. At this time, changes in lifestyle and habits will have less impact on the baby. If the weather is too hot, the baby will already feel uncomfortable, and weaning will make him cry and make a fuss, and he may also vomit or have diarrhea due to gastrointestinal discomfort with the food. If the weather is too cold, the baby will have restless sleep and easily develop an upper respiratory tract infection. If your baby's weaning age happens to be at this time, it is best to delay it.
