Many newborns' blood types do not match their mothers'. This may be caused by recessive genes. If the baby's blood type does not match the mother's, various diseases may occur. Miscarriage can occur while the baby is still in the mother's womb, but it can actually be prevented if the baby's blood type does not match the mother's. Let's take a look at what happens when the newborn's blood type does not match the mother's?

When the blood types are incompatible between the mother and the fetus, the red blood cells in the fetal blood will gradually be damaged, which may cause various pathological changes, resulting in miscarriage, premature birth, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and in severe cases, fetal death.

There are two most common types:

(1)ABO blood type incompatibility. If the pregnant woman's blood type is O and her husband's blood type is A, B or AB, and the fetus's blood type is A or B, it is ABO maternal-fetal blood incompatibility, which is relatively common in my country. However, this blood type incompatibility is relatively mild, newborns rarely suffer from jaundice, and the harm is relatively small.

(2) Rh blood type incompatibility. Rh blood type is divided into Rh positive and Rh negative. If the pregnant woman's Rh factor is negative, her husband is Rh positive, and the fetus's blood type is Rh positive, Rh blood incompatibility will occur. Among the Han Chinese in my country, only 0.34% are Rh negative, and this blood incompatibility is rare; among the Uyghurs, 4.9% are Rh negative, so the problem of Rh blood incompatibility is more prominent in areas where the Uyghurs live.

Possible complications/impacts: Regardless of the type of maternal-fetal blood type incompatibility, the harm is due to the presence of antibodies against fetal red blood cells in the pregnant woman's blood. These antibodies can pass through the placenta into the fetal blood.

Large amounts of antibodies react with corresponding antigens on the fetal red blood cell membrane, thereby destroying the fetal red blood cells and causing hemolysis.

A large number of red blood cells are destroyed, causing fetal anemia, heart enlargement, fetal and placental edema, an increase in the number of nucleated red blood cells in the blood, and in severe cases, fetal hypoxia, resulting in intrauterine fetal death.

Patients with mild illness can give birth at full term. However, newborns may experience anemia, enlarged liver and spleen, or early jaundice, and increased indirect bilirubin in the blood. This type of bilirubin can pass through the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier and cause yellowing of the nuclei of brain nerves, affecting intellectual development and neurological function, and is also called "kernicterus." Anyone who is at risk of maternal-fetal blood type incompatibility should actively cooperate with doctors to conduct pregnancy and newborn monitoring to prevent and reduce its harm.

Incompatibility of blood types between mother and child can cause great harm. Giving blood transfusion to the fetus in the uterus and terminating the pregnancy at an appropriate time to save the fetus from danger as soon as possible is also an effective measure. Generally, pregnant women with blood type incompatibility should go to a specialist hospital for regular monitoring to block and reduce the harm.
