What are the symptoms of strabismus in children?

From a medical point of view, children's eyeballs are slightly shorter than those of adults, so most children have farsightedness, which is normal. However, as children grow up, their autonomy becomes stronger and they see more things up close, and their eyes will undergo certain changes. If any problem occurs during this process, it may cause some eye diseases. So, what are the symptoms of strabismus in children?

type

1. Amblyopia or lazy eye. When a child has strabismus for a long time, he will not be able to use that eye, which will cause the vision of that eye to be impaired. The eye whose vision is impaired due to lack of use is called the amblyopic or lazy eye.

2. Weak binocular vision. The ability to see depth and stereoscopically requires the use of both eyes in parallel, so children with long-term strabismus will lack depth and stereoscopic perception.

3. Abnormal head position. In order to use both eyes, some children with chronic strabismus tilt their head or face. When parents find that their children have the above strabismus symptoms, they should take them to a regular hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

Operation time

Generally speaking, if children develop esotropia after 6 months of age, they must not undergo surgery immediately and must first undergo mydriasis refraction testing. If you have hyperopia, wear corrective glasses of sufficient power for 3 to 6 months first. If the esotropia is completely corrected, there is no need for surgery and you can be cured by continuing to wear glasses. If the esotropia is only alleviated after wearing glasses for more than 6 months and residual strabismus still exists, surgical treatment should be performed. If the strabismus does not change after wearing glasses, surgery should be performed as soon as possible. If congenital esotropia is discovered after birth or within 6 months, surgery should be performed at 1 to 2 years old, before the development of binocular single vision function. Monocular esotropia can be treated with occlusion therapy first to induce it to become alternating strabismus, and then surgery can be performed, which is more beneficial to restoring binocular single vision function. If covering for more than half a year is still ineffective, surgical treatment can also be used.

In principle, children with strabismus and amblyopia should be treated for amblyopia first and then for strabismus. Only when vision is improved can the effect of surgery be consolidated. However, for strabismus with a large degree, it must be corrected first, otherwise the strabismus eye cannot focus well and the amblyopic eye cannot be treated well. For esotropia or exotropia caused by intraocular diseases and whose vision cannot be restored, surgery should be performed after the age of 12.

Treatment

Methods for correcting strabismus in children 1. Treatments for strabismus in children include wearing glasses and surgical correction. If a child with esotropia also has moderate to high hyperopia, and wearing fully corrected hyperopia glasses can completely correct the esotropia, then such esotropia must be treated by wearing glasses; if the refractive examination shows no degree and wearing glasses cannot improve the strabismus, then it must be corrected through surgery.

Methods for correcting strabismus in children 2. When parents discover that their children have strabismus, they mistakenly believe that strabismus only affects the child's appearance, does not affect the child's eating, sleeping, playing, and going to school, and is not a disease, and that it will naturally get better when the child grows up; others believe that children with strabismus do not need to be treated early or wear glasses for treatment, and that they can undergo surgery to correct it when they grow up. These perceptions are incorrect. The purpose of strabismus treatment is not just to solve the problem of appearance, but more importantly, functional treatment, which includes the treatment of amblyopia and restoration of binocular vision, elimination of diplopia and compensation of head position, etc., which is of inestimable significance to the normal and healthy physiological and psychological growth and development of children. When you find that your child has strabismus, take him to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible. First of all, a comprehensive eye examination should be carried out, because some eye diseases may cause strabismus.
