Yellow discharge from newborn's eyes

Yellow discharge from newborn's eyes

In life, many mothers will find that their babies' eyes will discharge some yellow and thick substances, especially after waking up from sleep, there will be a lot of eye mucus. In fact, there are many reasons for the baby's eye mucus. It may be due to nasal diseases, throat problems, or incomplete development of the baby's tear glands. So what should I do if the newborn's eyes discharge yellow pus?

Baby's nasolacrimal duct obstruction causes yellow and thick eye mucus

We all have a nasolacrimal duct that runs from the inner corner of our eye into our nose, which is why our nose runs when we cry. However, for some babies, the nasolacrimal duct is not fully open at birth, which prevents tears from being discharged smoothly, leading to the accumulation of eye mucus. Therefore, you will find that the baby has more eye mucus, mostly in the form of white mucus.

Most children's nasolacrimal ducts will open naturally when they are one year old, and this situation will naturally disappear slowly after opening. However, if the child still has severe eye mucus after one year old, and it is still yellow and thick, then it may be dacryocystitis caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

How to deal with it: Parents can buy levofloxacin eye drops (imported colabito). Before each drop, use your thumb to press the base of the baby's nose towards the corner of the eye to press out all the eye mucus before dropping the medicine.

The baby's eye is infected and causes yellow and thick eye mucus

Common eye infections in infants include chemical and bacterial conjunctivitis. Chemical conjunctivitis is mostly caused by the fact that when a baby is just born, the hospital will put eye drops on the baby to prevent the baby from being infected by bacteria through the mother's vagina. Chemical conjunctivitis is caused by the inability to adapt to the eye drops and will return to normal after stopping use.

The common cause of bacterial conjunctivitis is cross-infection, so caregivers must wash their hands when touching children. The eye mucus caused by this type of conjunctivitis is mostly yellow and sticky, and the eyes are obviously congested.

Countermeasures: Generally, bacterial conjunctivitis is treated mainly with eye drops. First, use a cotton swab to clear the secretions, and then use anti-inflammatory eye drops, such as Tobramycin eye drops, rifampicin eye drops, tobramycin eye drops, etc. If there is no sign of improvement, you should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment immediately.

The baby has yellow and thick eye mucus due to internal heat

If your baby has thick yellow eye mucus but the eyes are not obviously congested, it may be caused by getting too hot. If you reduce the heat quickly, the eyes will heal faster.

Solution 1: Parents can consider using ordinary eye drops, such as chloramphenicol eye drops. Better solutions include Runshu, tobramycin eye drops, etc. Pay attention to eye cleaning and hygiene, and never let your child rub his eyes.
